Mercure Sydney International Airport - the ideal hotel near the airport

Recently I flew on an early morning Sunday flight from Sydney to an overseas destination.

I opted to stay at a hotel close to the airport, so I chose to stay the Saturday night at Mercure Sydney International Airport hotel. This is Accor's closest hotel to Sydney Airport. It is located at 22 Levey Street in Wolli Creek.

The Mercure Sydney International Airport hotel provided the perfect combination of peaceful comfort, relaxation, hospitality and location. It offers 271 recently upgraded rooms, fitness centre, restaurant, bar and onsite car parking.

A warm welcome greeted me at the reception desk, and I was soon on my way up the lift to my upgraded Privilege Room, which I accessed using the security keycard.

The contemporary colours and stylish décor of the recently refurnished room looked inviting. The welcome chocolates and mineral water were appreciated.

There was a work station for my laptop that I used with the complimentary in room WIFI. A large wall-mounted remote-controlled LCD TV offered free to air and Foxtel stations and movies. An iPod docking station and direct dial phone were in the room.

A luxury arm chair and individually climate controlled air conditioning made drinking the gourmet tea, coffee and mineral water a pleasure in the guest room. The espresso coffee machine made the perfect cup of coffee. A fridge was available to keep things cool.

The ensuite bathroom had a good shower and bath, with a quality range of complimentary toiletries on the vanity. Slippers and a bathrobe were provided.

I had a restful nights sleep on a very comfortable queen bed, aided by effective block-out curtains on the large double glazed window.

The next morning I enjoyed my international buffet breakfast at the Mercure Sydney International Airport hotel. It consisted of a selection of cereals, fresh and poached fruits, yoghurts, juices, coffee and tea. Hot dishes included eggs cooked to order, bacon, hash browns, grilled tomatoes and baked beans. The breakfast staff were particularly pleasant in their dealings with me and the other breakfast guests.

Lunch and dinner a-la-carte dining, featuring modern Australian-fusion cuisine, is available at the hotel’s Seasons Restaurant. 24-hour room service is also provided for those who prefer to eat in their room. Lack of time did not permit me to take advantage of the onsite fitness centre.

Mercure Sydney International Airport hotel is ideally suited to hosting all types of events, from banquets and boardroom meetings, to cocktail functions, trade shows, training seminars and weddings. It has 11 meeting rooms, including the hotel's largest event space, the Grand Ballroom, accommodating 6 to 400 delegates. Events are assisted by a planning service, delicious catering and a comprehensive range of AV equipment.

The location of the Mercure Sydney International Airport hotel is ideal. Not living in Sydney, but in a country town in NSW, meant that I had to either drive to the airport very early on Sunday morning, or travel down the day before and stay the night in Sydney. I chose the latter option.

This meant being driven from my hometown of Muswellbrook to Maitland on Saturday afternoon, then boarding a train to Newcastle and then another train to Sydney. However, this was a weekend of track works, so trains were replaced by buses.

The bus dropped me off at its final destination, Central Railway Station. I then had a choice of two stations to travel to by train, the Airport Station and Wolli Creek Station, as the Mercure Sydney International Airport hotel is located midway between them. To avoid the Airport Station access fee I took the train to Wolli Creek station and walked the short distance through Cahill Park to the Mercure International Airport hotel.

On Sunday morning I checked out and walked  the short distance over the Cooks River bridge and along the pathway through the airport carpark to the International Terminal. Most other hotel guests take advantage of the shuttle bus service to and from the airport, which is available for $6 each way.

The Mercure Sydney International Airport has recently completed its recent multimillion-dollar renovation project. Its excellent location near Sydney Airport’s international and domestic terminals makes it equally suited to business travellers, families on holiday, and airport passengers resting between flights.

The Mercure Sydney International Airport provides a leafy green sanctuary that overlooks both the Cooks River and Kogarah Golf Course, providing respite from the hustle and bustle of the airport. It offers a wonderful combination of peaceful comfort, relaxation, hospitality and location.
