ADVENTURE RACING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS SECURED FOR SHOALHAVEN

The 2016 Adventure Racing World Championships will be held in the Shoalhaven region, with the event secured by the NSW Government through Destination NSW, in partnership with Geocentric Pty Ltd and Shoalhaven City Council.

The endurance race will see athletes traverse the Shoalhaven’s wilderness regions and will be the culmination of an eight stage World Series which comprises a 700km race that includes trekking, mountain biking and kayaking.

It will be held in November next year with teams of four taking 5-10 days to complete the course.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the Adventure Racing World Championships is the sport’s pinnacle international event.

“The Championships is expected to attract up to 240 athletes from as many as 30 countries to the Shoalhaven region, providing significant benefits to the region’s visitor economy,” he said.

Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock said the Championships will help cement the Shoalhaven’s reputation as a premier destination for enjoying the great outdoors.

“The Shoalhaven is increasingly known as an adventure playground, with great natural beauty and a variety of experiences on offer just a short drive from the international gateway of Sydney,” Mrs Hancock said.

“As well as bringing many visitors to the Shoalhaven during the event, the Adventure Racing World Championships will showcase our region to millions of households in more than 70 countries through coverage on the Adventure Racing World Series television program.’’

Exact dates for the 2016 Adventure Racing World Championships will be announced once the review of the course and race logistics have been approved by the relevant NSW Government authorities.
