Top 100 Restaurants in Canada Revealed

Australian foodies visiting Canada can now experience the best culinary sensations, with the new Canada's 100 Best Restaurants Guide taking the guess work out of choosing a restaurant in an unfamiliar city.

Editor-in-chief, Jacob Richler, hopes this new guide will be indispensable to locals and visitors looking to dine out in an informed way, almost anywhere in Canada.

“The rankings were determined by factoring in the opinions of experts, including food critics, chefs, restaurateurs and the dining public,” says Jacob. “Seventy experts were selected from each province, according to its population and each was asked to submit a list of what they considered to be the 10 best restaurants in the country.”

Toque! in Montreal ranked number one overall, with Head Chef Norman Laprise known for revolutionising menus throughout Canada with a focus on farm-to-table, ingredient-driven cuisine and intense collaboration between chef and producer.

Since opening in 1993, Laprise's innovative culinary style and playful juxtapositions of flavour (such as lamb tartare with melon sorbet), along with the colourful décor and discreet service, continues to be a huge hit with critics and foodies alike.

Six restaurants in Toronto made the top 10 list, with Raymonds in the Newfoundland city of St John's placing fourth. This elegant, formal restaurant, housed in a former bank building may be credited for putting Newfoundland on the culinary map.

Newfoundland and Labrador has the advantage of being the only province in Canada that permits the sale of wild game, and Head Chef Jeremy Charles makes the most of this opportunity. Succulent local fresh cod, along with moose or caribou ravioli connect Raymonds to its region, embodying the essence of this unique Maritime province.

Following is the top 10 list of restaurants in Canada:

1. Toque! (Montreal)
2. Hawksworth (Vancouver)
3. Buca (Toronto)

5. Splendido (Toronto)
