Minister for Western NSW Kevin Humphries said the city was included on the list due to its outstanding heritage significance to Australia.
“Broken Hill has a rich and colourful history virtually unmatched by any city in regional Australia,” Mr Humphries said.
“It is the birthplace of one of the world’s largest mining companies, BHP, and has made an enormous contribution to Australia’s pastoral, political and artistic history.
“Broken Hill now stands alongside the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian War Memorial and the Sydney Harbour Bridge as one of our great national treasures.”
Minister for Heritage Rob Stokes said the listing will increase Broken Hill’s attraction as a tourist destination for visitors from across Australian and the world.
“Tourism is the lifeblood of Broken Hill and this funding will go a long way to growing the city’s tourism sector, creating local jobs and breathing fresh life into the local economy,” Mr Stokes said.
Broken Hill Mayor Wincen Cuy said the listing was a proud moment for the city.
“This prestigious citation will raise the international profile of Broken Hill, upgrade our visitor economy and provide our resilient community with momentum to endure in our efforts towards economic diversification,” he said.
