82 percent of the Austrian population, or about 5.9 million Austrians above the age of 14, have never been to New York. Or, to put it in other terms, approximately 18 percent or about 1.3 million Austrians have already visited the legendary American metropolis. These are the results of a representative survey carried out by the market and opinion research company GfK Austria on behalf of Austrian Airlines. The domestic airline contracted GfK to implement the survey within the context of a transnational Facebook campaign of the Lufthansa Group for Belgium, Germany and Austria. 500 Austrians and 1,000 Germans were interviewed.
Interesting details
The disparities with respect to the regional distribution in Austria are striking. In particular, people from Vienna (about 30% of the city’s inhabitants) have already been to New York once, whereas a far lower percentage of citizens in other federal provinces (only 10-20%) have been to this city on the East Coast of the USA. It is also important to note the considerable fluctuations with regard to the travel behavior of people in the federal provinces. In any case, people in the 30-39 age group (25%) as well as individuals with a high school diploma or a higher level of education (30%) have already travelled to New York.
In comparison to Germany a larger number of Austrians have been to the Big Apple. Only 8 percent of the Germans, but still a total of 5.7 million people, have already travelled to New York. This means that our German neighbors have less of an affinity to New York than people in the Alpine Republic.
Lufthansa Group to operate 13 daily flights to New York
Lufthansa Group (AUSTRIAN, LUFTHANSA, SWISS, BRUSSELS AIRLINES) connects 7 European cities with 20 North American destinations. 12 daily flights from the hubs Brussels, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Geneva, Munich, Vienna and Zurich to New York give example of an outstanding transatlantic connectivity. Starting on July 2, 2014, the number of flight connections will be increased from 12 to 13 each day, due to the fact that Austrian Airlines will also fly to Newark, the second international New York airport. On average, 10,000 passengers travel from Europe to the US on up to 47 LH Group flights a day. Lufthansa also employs more than 10,000 people in the US. Worldwide 120,000 employees work for the biggest European airline Group.
