Queensland's Tourism Industry Grows to $23 Billion

Tourism in Queensland is booming with new data released last month showing the industry has contributed $23 billion to our economy during the last year.

Minister for Tourism Jann Stuckey said the latest State Tourism Satellite Account figures proved the Newman Government's DestinationQ strategy to revitalise tourism was paying off.

“The data shows that during the past two years ago, the tourism industry has seen economic growth of more than $3.5 billion,” said Ms Stuckey.

“Our tourism industry is responsible for sustaining 241,000 Queensland jobs..

“The data shows that tourism is creating jobs for Queensland with a 13 per cent increase in tourism employment over the last two years.

“The Newman Government moved quickly to recognise tourism as one of the four pillars of the Queensland economy and we have worked diligently with industry to reboot tourism, stimulate economic growth and create jobs for Queenslanders.”

Ms Stuckey said the Government's plans to get tourism back on track are working.

“Destination Success, our 20-year plan for tourism outlines our aspirations and what will set Queensland apart as a destination of choice on the national and international stage, both now and in to the future,” she said.

“We are working closely with the sector to restore confidence and boost visitation across our tourism industry.

“Partnerships and shared vision like this will help the Newman Government together with industry achieve our goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion in 2020.”
