New National Tourism Forecasts

Tourism Research Australia (TRA) has released updated national tourism forecasts in the report Tourism Forecasts, Spring 2013.

The forecasts represent the most likely outcome for tourism given past trends and expected trends in economy, accommodation, aviation, and the impact of policy and industry changes. TRA predicts total tourism expenditure in Australia to increase by 2.7 per cent to $98.2 billion in 2013-14.

International visitor arrivals will accelerate to a growth rate of 5.8 per cent in 2013-14, driven by an 8.4 per cent growth from the Asian market as led by China, Malaysia and India. Domestic visitor nights are forecast to increase by 2.0 per cent, while outbound departures are expected to slow to a growth rate of 4.9 per cent over the same period.

Over the next decade, India and China are expected to be the fastest growing source market for Australia while the average annual growth in domestic visitor nights is expected to slow to a 1.0 per cent.
