Visitors to the International Fleet Review starting this week should plan ahead and use public transport to move around.
Ms Berejiklian this week joined the Navy at a ceremony at Darling Harbour to kick-start celebrations and welcome 8,000 Australian and international naval personnel who will be visiting New South Wales for the International Fleet Review.
A series of events will take place across Sydney from this week. Sixteen tall ships from around the world sailed into Sydney Harbour on Thursday 3 October – these were followed by around 40 Australian and international warships.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to welcome visitors for such an historic occasion - 100 years since the first Royal Australian Navy ships arrived in Sydney," said Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian.
Ms Berejiklian urged spectators to avoid driving, to be patient and be prepared for some delays and large crowds throughout the entire event.
"We're expecting 1.7 million people in Sydney between October 3-11, and 1.4 million visitors during the long weekend alone,” she said.
"Vantage points will fill up quickly so plan to arrive early, and have a back-up location in mind just in case the site is full when you arrive. Also, make sure you dress for the weather and have plenty of food, water and sunscreen."
Public transport will be the best way to travel around, and there will be more than 4,000 extra bus services and 1,000 extra train services running.
Many of these services will be running for the biggest day of the event on Saturday 5 October – the Ceremonial Fleet Review and Fireworks and Lightshow Spectacular.
"All these services have been added to the timetable to make it as easy as possible for people to get to the celebrations and home again afterwards,” Ms Berejiklian said.
"There will also be extra buses on all major corridors into and out of the CBD and to other popular harbour vantage points.
"Anyone planning to travel by ferry throughout the celebrations should expect possible delays as ferry services will be very popular and reach capacity quickly."
Extensive road closures and special event clearways will be in place across Sydney from October 3-11.
There will be traffic and parking restrictions, similar to New Year's Eve, on Saturday 5 October so leaving the car behind is the best option.
Many roads will be closed and special event clearways will be in place around the Sydney Harbour Foreshore. Council areas impacted include City Of Sydney, North Sydney, Mosman, Woollahra, Waverley, Hunters Hill, Lane Cove and Leichhardt.
"We're urging people not to drive as getting around by car and finding a park will be difficult,” Ms Berejiklian said.
If you want to board one of the warships that will be open to the public at Garden Island and Barangaroo, don't forget to buy your ticket beforehand at Ticketek.
Anyone who has to drive in the CBD or around the harbour from October 3-11 should expect significant delays and allow plenty of extra travel time. Motorists are also advised to check before parking as vehicles left in special event clearways will be towed away, and a fee applies.
