On Sunday 20 October, the Opera House celebrated 40 action-packed years and the beginning of a decade of renewal with an official Happy Birthday spectacular on the Monumental Stairs.
Hosted by HG Nelson, the event welcomed the public to celebrate the special occasion, with the help of the Royal Australian Navy Band, Australian Girls Choir, Surf Life Saving NSW, Etihad Airways, Danish-owned towage operators Svitzer Fire Tugs and Harbour City Ferries.
A commemorative flotilla and special welcome to country ceremony marked the occasion, renowned chef and restaurateur Matt Moran presented the Opera House with an oversized cupcake and Australian music legend Jimmy Barnes led a spectacular Happy Birthday sing-a-long. The event included speeches from dignitaries and special words from Jørn Utzon’s children, Jan and Lin Utzon.
