Panchalankurichi in Tamil Nadu Attracts Tourists to its Paintings

Panchalankurichi, in Tamil Nadu is a small but historic village around 70 km from Tirunelveli and 18 km from Tuticorin. This place is stored with historical evidences of the India under the British rule and people who find interest in viewing historical treasures take great pleasure in visiting this place.

The existing memorial fort was constructed in 1974, by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The memorial Hall, have beautiful paintings on the walls depicting the heroic deeds of the saga which gives a good idea about the history of the period.

Sri Devi Jakkammal Temple, the hereditary Goddess of Kattabomman, is located near the fort. A cemetery of British soldiers are also seen near the fort. The remnants of the old fort are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

At Kayatar, near Tirunelveli the place where he was hanged, there is another memorial for Kattabomman.

Within the Memorial Hall, there are beautiful paintings on the walls depicting the heroic deeds of the saga. The snap shot of the 5th generation heir of Veerapandya Katthabomman is also shown over here. His name is “Veemaraja” alias “Jegaveera Pandya Subbramania Kattabomma Durai”. “Bommu” means God Sashtha Ayyanam Swamy (also spelt as Sashtha Ayyanam Swami). The British gave the sentence of death by hanging Kattabomman and others on charges of treason.

Some of the other noteworthy persons who were hanged along with Kattabomman are:
Kaadal Kudi Zamin, Veeraghenchayan Naieker Zamin, Nagalapuram Puthur Zamin, Dali Ethalappa Naicker Zamin, Kaveri Ammal Patti Zamin, Vripachy Zamin, Sivagengai Zamin.

The visitors can visit this palace during the hours of 8-00 to 1-00 PM and 2-00PM to 6-00 PM. The spectacular artwork is breath taking and makes a perfect outing for art lovers.
