Splendid fireworks, dazzling decorations with colourful candles, “rangolis”, sumptuous spread of delicious delicacies and family gatherings are some mega highlights of the popular Hindu festival- Diwali. This auspicious festival marks the triumph of good over evil. According to mythology, Diwali was witnessed on the day when Rama completed his fourteen years of damnation and returned back t o his kingdom. The festival commences with Dhanteras on which most Indian business communities begin their financial year and worship of goddess Lakshmi. Diwali is widely celebrated with zeal and fervour throughout India and countries with large Indian communities like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. This year Diwali will be celebrated on 3rd November.
In an effort to boost tourist arrivals during off-season, Jammu and Kashmir government has announced a 50 per cent rebate on lodging and transport charges to those visiting the Valley on the eve of Diwali and Saffron festival.
