2014 SMH Good Food Guide Awards Light Up The Star

More than 500 of the top chefs and culinary commentators from across New South Wales came together at The Star's Event Centre, as the SMH Good Food Guide award winners were announced in a glittering ceremony.

The evening saw the state-of-the-art multi-use venue add another string to its bow, having already played host in its short history to everything from the AACTA Awards in January to concerts from world renowned performers including Seal, John Farnham, Garbage and comedian, Chris Tucker.

The Star's multitude of signature dining restaurants relished the opportunity to show off their culinary credentials to the discerning crowd, with Momofuku Seiōbo joined by BLACK by ezard, Balla, Sokyo and The Century to serve up an array worthy of the auspicious occasion.

Joanna Savill, Festival Director of Good Food Month, heralded The Star's service team following the successful evening: "Thank you so much for your wonderful work last night in making a really fabulous event for us.

Everyone has commented on the delicious food and great stations and service. We think it has been 'the best event ever' according to many guests, including our major sponsors. We look forward to Good Food Month at the Star and the Rene Redzipi dinner".

The pre-awards menu saw perfect Peking duck from The Century battling for favouritism with Balla's squid ink tagliolini and scampi as guests sipped on Pol Roger champagne; while David Chang's famed Momofuku steamed pork buns, a selection of sushi and sashimi from Sokyo and BLACK by ezard's beef tartare with beetroot and radish were among the signature dishes on offer post-ceremony.

The Messina Gelato cart held rightful sway as the celebrations kicked on into the evening, and teams from the night's hatted restaurants, Momofuku Seiōbo (three hats), Balla (one hat) and Sokyo (one hat) celebrated in style. Momofuku Seiōbo was also recognised for one of the best dishes of the year for their potato, buttermilk and parson's nose delight; while Sommelier, Richard Hargreave, received the Sommelier of the Year award.
