PROPOSED DESIGN FOR NEW HOTEL AT DARLING HARBOUR RELEASED

Plans for a new premium hotel to be built at Darling Harbour by the end of 2016 moved forward with the release of a proposed design for community feedback.

Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner welcomed the start of the next phase of community consultation by Lend Lease, which is one of the NSW Government’s private sector partners to deliver a major transformation of Darling Harbour. The hotel is subject to planning assessment.

“It is exciting that the first major hotel to be built on a greenfield site in the CBD since the Sydney 2000 Olympics will be at a renewed Darling Harbour,” Mr Stoner said.

“The hotel will be an important landmark for Darling Harbour and reflect the high quality of the new international convention and exhibition facilities that it will support.

“In just three years, Darling Harbour will have undergone its biggest change in 25 years. It will have a new hotel, new convention, exhibition and entertainment facilities, and a new neighbourhood in the Haymarket that is humming with activity from cafes, shops, apartments and offices.”

Mr Stoner said the redevelopment of Darling Harbour will begin at the end of this year. The new facilities and hotel will be built over the next three years, opening at the end of 2016.

“The transformation of Darling Harbour is as much about creating an even better place for Sydneysiders as it is about putting this city on the map for the growing global convention and exhibition business,” Mr Stoner said.

“The proposed hotel is an integral part of supporting the convention and exhibition facilities, and will help address the shortfall of hotel accommodation in Sydney.”

Lend Lease is now seeking further community feedback on the refined hotel design which will be considered prior to lodging a development application later this month.

Lend Lease and the other members of the Darling Harbour Live consortium are partnering with the NSW Government to redevelop the precinct and create one of the world’s best places to live, meet and be entertained.
