Embracing New Zealand’s Māori culture at MEETINGS 2018

MEETINGS 2017 Rotorua stand
New Zealand’s Māori cultural values will be a key focus of MEETINGS 2018, the country’s leading business events exhibition opening this week in Auckland.

Conventions and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) Chief Executive Sue Sullivan says New Zealand’s Māori culture gives business event organisers a unique point of difference in a competitive international environment.

“Our culture sets Aotearoa New Zealand apart on the world stage. Our venue designers, our artists, our leaders, and our hosts are embracing Māori culture at many levels in their business event thinking.

“Māori culture is more than something we do, it is who we are, from the way we greet our visitors, to the time and care we take in hosting them,” she says.

The three core values of Māori culture Kaitiakitanga – the guardianship and protection of our natural, built and cultural resources, Manaakitanga – showing respect, warm hospitality, generosity and care for others, and Whanaungatanga – a relationship through shared experiences and working together, giving people a sense of belonging.

“These values underpin what we do, give visitors a deeper connection to New Zealand and a greater understanding of our capabilities and our culture,” Sue Sullivan says.

Before MEETINGS 2018 opens on Wednesday 30 May, CINZ Māori culture advisor Ngahihi o-te-ra Bidois will bless the exhibition space at ASB Showgrounds, and the stands and food served to guests with traditional karakia (prayers). He will do the same at the event’s conclusion on 31 May and wish safe travels for all visitors.

As the Kaiārahi Māori, or Māori guide, for the New Zealand Story programme, Karl Wixon is responsible for the infusion, inclusion and development of Māori culture, character and content into the New Zealand Story programme. At MEETINGS 2018 he will be presenting a Masterclass for Professional Conference Organisers (PCO), to guide them to a deeper understanding of Māori culture, and showing what can be done to integrate Māori values into events in a meaningful way.

“Karl will help participants navigate through aspects of incorporating Māori culture into their business events, and guide them to articulate our unique Kiwi identity,” she says.

The MEETINGS PCO Masterclass is sponsored by Claudelands in Hamilton, where Māori culture is highlighted throughout the building design which gives a unique opportunity for the venue to help bring that story to life throughout conferences and events.

In total,19 regions of New Zealand are represented at MEETINGS 2018, all of them have something different to offer on a cultural level, with stories, people and places specific to their local region. Wharewaka and Wellington Venues are demonstrating the significance culture plays in bringing central Wellington to life, for example.

This year Northland returns to MEETINGS with exhibitors including Foot Prints Waipoua, The Heads at Omapere – new secluded villas supported by Copthorne Hotel and Resort Hokianga, and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. They will be sharing their stories and looking to build on relationships to grow and strengthen their business within the Te Tai Tokerau region.

New Zealand’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Kelvin Davis who will be speaking MEETINGS, is also Minister for Crown/Māori Relations, and local MP for the Te Tai Tokerau region.

Sichuan to Build a Panda National Park Three Times the Size of Yellowstone

Pandas
With a poverty-alleviation funding of over 10 billion Yuan (USD 1.58 billion) from the Bank of China Sichuan Branch, China’s Sichuan province government is planning to build a Giant Panda National Park three times the size of the U.S. Yellowstone National Park.

According to the World Wildlife Foundation, Pandas are slow breeders and their numbers can quickly drop if their way of life is disrupted. The park will hopefully help recover the endangered species while benefiting the low-income local residents financially.

Zhang Weichao, a Sichuan official involved in the park planning, told the state-run China Daily that the agreement will help alleviate poverty among the 170,000 people living within the project’s proposed territory.

Aung San and seven other leaders of the pre-independence interim government, and one bodyguard —Thakin Mya, Ba Cho, Abdul Razak, Ba Win, Mahn Ba Khaing, Sao San Tun, Ohn Maung and Ko Htwe—all of whom were assassinated on July 19, 1947.

It is customary for high-ranking government officials to visit the Martyrs’ Mausoleum in Yangon in the morning of that day to pay respects.

Temple of Literature to host first-ever summer programme for children

Ha Noi’s Temple of Literature
Ha Noi’s Temple of Literature will host a first-ever summer programme for children from June 1 to August 20, which is designed to educate children on Vietnamese traditional cultural values while improving their life skills.

The programme will feature activities allowing children to explore traditional crafts, including ‘do’ paper painting, kite making, and pottery, as well as letting the kids try their hands at making complete handicraft products.

Under the programme, painting classes will be held from 9 am to 11 am every Sunday morning, in which veteran painters will teach children about watercolour paintings and instruct them on how to paint in watercolour. The children’s artworks will then be auctioned to raise funds for poor children across the country.

In addition, kids will have the chance to learn about the studies and examinations of students in the past, and take part in a kite making contest, with the winner being sent to compete at international events.

Le Xuan Kieu, Director of the Temple of Literature’s Cultural and Scientific Centre, said that the programme is expect to provide Vietnamese children with a deeper understanding of their ancestor’s cultural heritage through folk games and crafts.

It is also designed to make the Temple of Literature more attractive to the city dwellers, and visitors from home and abroad, he added.

joint-campaign in Yangon.

Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has partnered with Bangkok Airways to kick-off its campaign to attract meeting and incentive groups from the Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) markets. The ‘Fly and Meet Double Bonus’ promotion for Myanmar was launched by TCEB’s Director of President Office Department, Mr.Puripan Bunnag, and Bangkok Airway’s Vice President – Sales, Mr. Varong Israsena Na Ayudhya, at Chatrium Hotel in Yangon on May 7, 2018.

Puripan said: “The partnership with Bangkok Airways is in line with Thailand’s strategic development through collaboration with neighboring countries, especially those in the CLMV. In addition, it is TCEB’s policy to work closely with the private sector to boost Thailand’s MICE industry. Our joint promotion campaign comes at the right timing because of the present active business activities in the region. We saw a healthy CLMV business traveler arrival growth of as high as 24% last year and we expect a healthier picture contributed by this campaign”.

Varong said: “With Bangkok Airways’ strong presence as a full service carrier in CMLV as well as its flexible flight connectivity within domestic Thailand linking the MICE cities, we strongly believe this partnership will attract a growing number of CLMV business travellers into the country”.

The campaign delivers a series of benefits for meeting and incentive travel groups. For VIPs arriving at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, TCEB will provide a special MICE lane with fast track service through immigration. It will also offer a financial subsidy up to 300,000 Thai Baht (USD 9,000) per group. Planners may also opt for cultural performances, meet-and-greet service or Thai craft demonstrations of equivalent value to their financial subsidies.

Bangkok Airways will provide one complimentary ticket for every group of 50 passengers; FlyerBonus double points, additional 10 kilograms of baggage allowance, pre-assigned group seating, a special check-in counter, pre-check-in service, priority tagging and souvenirs.

Kotan Onsen
Kotan Onsen is a small hot spring resort in Teshikaga town located in the north part of Kushiro city. It is very popular among tourists and the local people.

There is really great view on the lake! Don't miss the sunset, it is truly an unique experience!
