A Scenic Escape to Lake Chuzenji
Available from 1 July to 30 November 2026, the limited-time Lakeside Picnic Ride has been launched by Tobu Railway in partnership with Nikko Natural Science Museum.
The experience begins with a scenic journey from Tokyo towards Nikko before continuing by bus into the mountains of Oku-Nikko. Travellers can hire a bicycle and helmet from the Nikko Natural Science Museum before setting off to explore the spectacular shoreline of Lake Chuzenji.
At an elevation of 1,269 metres, the lake is surrounded by the rugged Nikko Mountains and offers magnificent views throughout the year. In autumn, the scenery becomes particularly impressive as the surrounding forests transform into brilliant seasonal colours.
Cycle, Explore and Enjoy a Picnic
The appeal of the Lakeside Picnic Ride is its simplicity. Everything is arranged so visitors can concentrate on enjoying the scenery.
The reservation includes bicycle and helmet hire, together with a choice of picnic options. Visitors can choose a cake and drink set, featuring cheesecake or apple pie, or a sandwich set accompanied by French fries and onion rings.
The picnic can be collected from Coffee House Yukon at the nearby Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel. One of the most atmospheric places to enjoy it is Lake Chuzenji Boat House, where visitors can sit beside the water with the mountains and autumn foliage providing a spectacular natural backdrop.

Nearby, Kegon Falls is another essential stop. The dramatic waterfall is easily accessible and has a free viewing platform.
Cyclists passing through Chugushi can also look for Futarasan-jinja Shrine, a Shinto shrine dating back to the eighth century and an important part of Nikko’s cultural heritage.
A Year-Round Nikko Experience
Although autumn provides an especially colourful backdrop, Lake Chuzenji and Oku-Nikko are rewarding destinations in every season.
The area experiences a later cherry blossom season, generally from late April to early May, while summer brings cooler mountain temperatures that have long attracted visitors seeking relief from the heat of Tokyo.
In winter, snow transforms the surrounding mountains and forests into a striking monochrome landscape.
Tobu Railway services operate throughout the year, making Nikko an accessible destination for travellers looking to combine Tokyo with nature, outdoor activities and Japanese culture.
