Sacred Trails and Serene Journeys: Savannakhet Invites Thai Pilgrims

Bridging Cultures Through Buddhist Heritage

Savannakhet province in southern Laos is positioning itself as a rising destination for pilgrimage tourism, particularly aimed at Thai travellers. With sacred sites steeped in history and connected across borders, this cross-cultural spiritual journey is more than just a travel trend — it’s a rediscovery of shared roots and reverence.

Easily reached via the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge from Mukdahan province in Thailand, Savannakhet offers visitors a tranquil and meaningful route through centuries-old Buddhist landmarks that transcend modern boundaries.

A Spiritual Triangle of Sacred Sites

At the heart of Savannakhet’s pilgrimage campaign are three prominent Buddha relic sites:

  • Wat Phra That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand
  • Phra That Sikhotabong in Khammouane, Laos
  • Phra That Ing Hang in Savannakhet, Laos

These revered sites are believed to house relics of the Buddha and are architecturally influenced by Khmer styles, dating back to the reign of King Nanthasen of Sri Khotraboon. During the Thai-Lao Songkran New Year, grand fairs and ceremonies are held, uniting communities in merit-making and celebration.

Tradition Meets Tourism

Savannakhet is actively transforming into a destination that balances development with cultural preservation. Infrastructure is being upgraded, local festivals are being promoted, and transport links are expanding to accommodate the growing number of cultural and religious tourists.

Last year, the province welcomed over 3 million visitors, with most hailing from Thailand, Vietnam, and other nearby nations. The rise in tourism has significantly boosted local economies, with businesses around the Mekong riverside, traditional craft markets, and culinary hubs benefiting from the influx.

Beyond the Pilgrimage

While sacred sites remain the centerpiece, Savannakhet offers much more. Visitors can explore the Savannakhet Museum, wander through the charming colonial-era Old Town, or relax along the Mekong riverside.

The anticipated National Heritage designation of Phra That Phon is expected to add another jewel to the province’s religious landscape, drawing even more pilgrims and cultural tourists.

A Gateway to Regional Exploration

According to the Lao government, Savannakhet is also a key player in a broader strategy to develop a Thailand-Laos-Vietnam tourism corridor. Through shared borders and improved road networks, the aim is to create a seamless travel experience that connects cultures, religions, and communities.

For Thai pilgrims and curious travelers alike, a journey to Savannakhet is an invitation to step into a world where history, faith, and hospitality converge.

Discover Europe the Silk Skyway Way: Transit Through China with China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines
A New Route to Europe Worth Exploring

The well-trodden path from Australia to Europe just got a fascinating twist. With increasing connectivity from Sydney to China, more Australian travellers are turning their gaze eastward when planning their next European adventure. Thanks to the Silk Skyway—an emerging travel route via mainland China—flying with Chinese airlines like China Southern offers an affordable, comfortable and culturally enriching way to reach Europe.

Currently, only around four per cent of Aussie travellers flying from Sydney to Europe choose to transit through China. But that figure is expected to grow as awareness builds around the perks of flying with world-class Chinese airlines and the excellent connections offered from Chinese hub airports.

Gateway to Europe: The Benefits of Flying via China

From classic European capitals like Paris, Rome and London, to trending destinations such as Budapest and Belgrade, Chinese airlines have created a vast network of direct flights to Europe. Airlines including China Southern, China Eastern, Air China, and Juneyao Air operate from Sydney Airport, offering quick transfers, competitive fares and top-tier in-flight services.

Chinese hub airports such as Guangzhou Baiyun, Shanghai Pudong, and Beijing Capital are known for their efficiency, modern design and outstanding facilities. And thanks to China’s 30-day visa-free policy for Australian passport holders, travellers have the option to extend their layover and explore vibrant Chinese cities without the hassle of a visa.

Spotlight On: China Southern Airlines

Leading the Silk Skyway charge is China Southern Airlines (CZ), headquartered in the dynamic city of Guangzhou. Known for its rich history and world-famous cuisine, Guangzhou is a destination in its own right. Think morning dim sum, riverfront walks on Shamian Island, and the intricate architecture of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall.

China Southern’s home base, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), is one of the most connected and modern airports in Asia. The airport recently won “Best Airport in China” at the 2025 Skytrax World Airport Awards and is set to become even more impressive with the completion of its Terminal 3 and fifth runway later this year.

All international CZ flights depart from the same terminal, simplifying the transfer process for travellers heading to Europe. Destinations served include Frankfurt, London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Moscow and many more.

Added Extras and Transit Perks

China Southern Airlines stands out for its traveller-friendly perks. Whether you’re flying business, premium economy or economy, you’ll enjoy generous luggage allowances—two checked bags of up to 23kg in economy and up to 32kg in business class.

Transit passengers booking Sydney to Europe via Guangzhou can also enjoy:

  • One night’s free accommodation in Guangzhou

  • A complimentary city tour from the airport

  • Lounge access for business class passengers, or pay-per-use options for others

These additions transform a typical layover into a chance to experience a slice of China—at no extra cost.

A Win for the Wallet and the Itinerary

China Southern Airlines
China Southern’s competitive pricing, even during peak travel seasons, makes it an excellent choice for Australians heading to Europe. With seamless transfers, quality onboard service, and the opportunity to explore an extra destination along the way, the Silk Skyway is redefining how we think about long-haul travel.

And if you're in the Aussie travel industry, there’s an exciting opportunity to be part of this journey. China Southern is looking for content creators to film the Silk Skyway experience—with return business class flights and hotel stays included.

Full Steam Ahead: Mary Valley Rattler Finds New Fans Across the Ditch

Mary Valley Rattler
Heritage Rail Wins Hearts in New Zealand

The Mary Valley Rattler, one of Queensland’s most charming heritage rail experiences, is turning heads in New Zealand as it positions itself as a must-do for Kiwi travellers. With direct flights now linking Auckland and Sunshine Coast Airport, the iconic rail service based in Gympie is seizing the moment to capture the imagination of New Zealand’s rail-loving market.

Fresh from a Tourism and Events Queensland sales mission to New Zealand, Mary Valley Rattler General Manager, Sherry Lowe, returned with an optimistic outlook. According to Lowe, the heritage railway service made a strong impression on the New Zealand travel trade, many of whom already had a solid understanding of the Sunshine Coast as a destination — and were eager to discover its inland gems.

Tapping into New Zealand’s Love of Steam

New Zealand has a rich tradition of train travel, with a widespread appreciation for steam trains and historical rail journeys. From themed excursions to beautifully preserved locomotives, rail nostalgia runs deep in the Kiwi spirit. The Mary Valley Rattler, with its authentic steam engine, scenic countryside journey, and historical character, fits naturally into the kind of travel experiences New Zealanders hold dear.

With both Jetstar and Air New Zealand offering direct flights from Auckland to the Sunshine Coast, access to Gympie and the Mary Valley has never been easier. This increased connectivity provides the perfect foundation for the Rattler to welcome a new wave of international passengers who are looking for more than just a beachside break.

More Than Just a Train Ride

Mary Valley Rattler
The Rattler journey is more than a scenic ride through rolling hills and picturesque farmlands. It’s a window into Queensland’s railway past and a celebration of the region’s present — with local produce, warm hospitality, and inviting towns along the route.

Food-lovers in particular are encouraged to “travel with their tastebuds,” exploring the rich culinary offerings of the Gympie region. Whether it’s enjoying a farm-fresh brunch at the Historic Gympie Station or sampling artisanal fare in the nearby Mary Valley villages, the Rattler offers a unique blend of heritage and flavour.

A Gateway to Wider Adventure

The Mary Valley Rattler also acts as a gateway to the broader Gympie region. From the adventure-packed Rainbow Beach to rainforest trails and markets brimming with local produce, the area delivers a variety of experiences perfect for travellers wanting to go beyond the ordinary.

With growing enthusiasm in the New Zealand market, the future looks bright for the Mary Valley Rattler. As more Kiwis look to explore inland Queensland this winter, the Rattler is ready to welcome them aboard for an unforgettable journey through time, taste, and spectacular scenery.

Asia Pacific’s Creative Pulse: The Spikes Asia 2025 Winners Set a New Standard

The Spikes Asia 2025
Where Ideas Shine Brightest

Every year, Spikes Asia showcases the most innovative, thought-provoking, and culture-shaping work from across the Asia Pacific region. Now, the winners of Spikes Asia 2025 have been revealed—and they offer a fascinating glimpse into the future of creativity. From bold storytelling to game-changing campaigns, this year’s honorees have not only raised the bar but redefined it.

Whether you're a traveler, a creative, or a culture enthusiast, these winners reflect the energy, diversity, and imagination of a region constantly in motion.

Australia and India Lead the Creative Charge

Topping the charts this year, both Australia and India claimed five Grands Prix each, cementing their status as creative powerhouses. These awards spanned across categories like Film, Digital Craft, and Outdoor, and highlighted both countries' ability to blend deep cultural insight with innovative execution.

From purpose-driven branding to viral social media moments, their work exemplifies how storytelling in the Asia Pacific is both rooted in tradition and forward-facing.

Kazakhstan’s Historic Breakthrough

One of the most exciting moments of Spikes Asia 2025 came from Kazakhstan. The country took home its first-ever Grand Prix in the Media Spikes category with GForce’s clever campaign, ‘The National Sport of Kazakhstan’. It also scored another in the Music Spikes with the emotionally resonant ‘Aidakhar’ campaign for Old Spice by NOTO Agency and Procter & Gamble.

These wins signal the emergence of Central Asian creativity on a global stage, bringing fresh perspectives and untapped cultural narratives into the spotlight.

Singapore’s Double Victory with Vaseline

Singapore also had a standout year with Ogilvy’s ‘Transition Body Lotion’ for Vaseline, which captured two Grands Prix in the Glass: Award for Change and Social & Influencer categories. The campaign championed inclusivity and identity in a way that resonated powerfully with both the jury and the public.

It served as a reminder that creative work can not only inspire but also drive change and challenge outdated norms.

A Showcase of APAC’s Cultural Tapestry

Spikes Asia is more than an award show—it’s a celebration of cultural expression and creative risk-taking. From heritage-rich stories to high-tech brilliance, the winning campaigns reflect the complexity and beauty of life in the Asia Pacific.

If you’re planning a trip across the region, consider making time for local art museums, ad festivals, and design districts. They’re not just places of inspiration—they’re where the future of global creativity is being written.
