Australia’s Cafes Sprinkle Kindness: Fairy Bread Day 2026 Supports Children in Foster Care

Australia's much-loved fairy bread tradition is spreading happiness beyond the party table this November, as 24 cafes across the country create colourful, limited-edition treats to support children and young people in foster care.

In the lead-up to National Fairy Bread Day on 24 November 2026, cafes in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania are joining forces with The Pyjama Foundation to raise awareness and funds for its important work supporting Australian children in care.

Running from 20 to 22 November, the special cafe promotion will feature imaginative interpretations of the classic Australian childhood favourite, with everything from sprinkle-covered ricotta hotcakes and soft serve to wagon wheels, pastries, cookies, drinks and colourful burger buns.

A Childhood Favourite with a Meaningful Purpose

Fairy bread, traditionally made with white bread, butter and hundreds and thousands, has been a familiar feature of Australian children's birthday parties for generations.

For Fairy Bread Day 2026, the theme is "whimsy-maxxing", encouraging Australians to embrace colour, creativity and fun by creating the most spectacular fairy bread celebrations possible.

Participating cafes are putting their own creative spin on the iconic treat, inviting customers to enjoy something delicious while supporting a worthwhile cause.

The initiative aims to shine a spotlight on The Pyjama Foundation, an Australian organisation dedicated to improving the lives of children and young people in foster care through learning-based mentoring and support.

The Pyjama Foundation Makes a Difference

Founded by Bronwyn Sheehan OAM, The Pyjama Foundation provides one-on-one mentoring through its Pyjama Angels program.

Trained volunteers spend time with children in foster care, helping them develop literacy and numeracy skills, build confidence, strengthen relationships and develop the life skills needed for a brighter future.

Bronwyn Sheehan says the support of Australia's cafe community is an important way to introduce more people to the foundation's work.

With children in care still waiting to be matched with their own Pyjama Angel, the organisation is encouraging more caring adults to become involved.

Every participating cafe and every donation helps raise awareness of the importance of providing children with encouragement, educational opportunities and positive relationships.

Dollar Sweets Adds $10,000 to the Cause

Supporting the nationwide celebration is confectionery brand Dollar Sweets, which has partnered with The Pyjama Foundation since 2023.

The company is donating the hundreds and thousands used in the special cafe creations and contributing $10,000 to the foundation.

This year's participation has grown, with 22 cafes involved in the Dollar Sweets partnership, compared with 14 in 2025.

Miranda Higgins, Managing Director of Dollar Sweets, welcomed the opportunity to work with cafes around Australia and encourage communities to support children's health and happiness.
