Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam is pioneering a unique approach to tourism by introducing astro-tourism experiences aimed at extending visitor stays while safeguarding its iconic wildlife habitats. Launched as a pilot initiative, this program seeks to diversify tourism offerings while keeping conservation at the heart of every activity.
The park recently conducted an astro-guide training camp at Rhinoland Park in Burrapahar, teaching local guides to lead stargazing sessions and night-sky experiences. By combining daytime wildlife safaris with nocturnal astronomy programs, Kaziranga aims to create meaningful, low-impact visitor experiences inspired by successful astro-tourism models in Chile, New Zealand, and Namibia.
Blending Nature, Science, and Culture
The “Cosmic Kaziranga” vision emphasizes education, conservation, and community engagement. Astronomy professionals from the Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers Association and specialists from the Andaman Islands led practical sessions on stargazing, astrophotography, and storytelling linked to local night-sky legends. These programs encourage visitors to extend their stays without putting additional pressure on the park’s core habitats. Managing light and sound pollution is a key priority, ensuring that wildlife remains undisturbed while night-sky visibility is maximized.
Supporting Local Livelihoods and Low-Impact Tourism
By training local youth as astro-guides and promoting responsible tourism, Kaziranga is creating sustainable employment opportunities for nearby communities. Visitors can now enjoy immersive experiences that blend wildlife, astronomy, and cultural heritage, reinforcing Kaziranga’s reputation as a world-class conservation destination. This innovative initiative positions Kaziranga not only as a haven for rhinos and tigers but also as a destination for conscious travelers seeking educational and environmentally sensitive adventures.
