This Saturday, 21 March 2026, the Wimmera Arts and Minerals Association (WAMA) will open its highly anticipated exhibition Entanglements with Fungi: Life, Death and Renewal at the National Centre for Environmental Art, nestled in the scenic foothills of the Grampians. This innovative show invites visitors to explore the mysterious and often overlooked world of fungi through a unique fusion of art, science, and sound.
Featuring an array of immersive works, the exhibition includes data-driven mushroom paintings, live fungal growth experiments, and an eight-metre-long artist’s book that stretches across the gallery, creating a striking visual narrative of life cycles and ecological connections.
A Multi-Sensory Experience for All Ages
Entanglements with Fungi offers a rare opportunity to engage all senses while learning about the vital role fungi play in our ecosystems. Visitors can experience the textures, colors, and patterns of fungal life in ways rarely seen outside scientific laboratories. The exhibition bridges the gap between creativity and environmental science, offering a thought-provoking journey that resonates with both art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.Whether you are fascinated by the microscopic details of fungal structures or inspired by the artistic interpretations, this exhibition promises an unforgettable encounter with one of nature’s most enigmatic kingdoms.
Hands-On Learning: Mushroom Masterclass with Alison Pouliot
On the same day, WAMA will host a Mushroom Masterclass from 10am to 12.30pm, led by renowned mycologist and environmental educator Alison Pouliot. This hands-on workshop will teach participants how to identify mushrooms in the wild, distinguish edible species from toxic look-alikes, and discover fungi in their natural habitats.Ideal for amateur naturalists, photographers, and anyone with a curiosity for the forest floor, the masterclass complements the exhibition by providing practical, real-world insights into fungal ecology.
