Cambodia is strengthening its position as a cultural tourism destination with new initiatives designed to enhance the visitor experience at the ancient temple complex of Sambor Prei Kuk. The Royal Government of Cambodia has identified four key projects aimed at increasing the site’s tourism appeal while improving the livelihoods of surrounding communities.
The initiatives form a central part of the Kampong Thom Provincial Tourism Development Plan for 2026–2030, which seeks to transform the region into a major heritage destination attracting both domestic and international travellers.
The strategy was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Vongsey Vissoth, who also serves as Chairman of the Royal Government Working Group for Kampong Thom province. The meeting brought together senior government officials, tourism leaders and representatives from several ministries to accelerate the development of the historic region.
Four Key Projects to Transform the Visitor Experience
The Cambodian government has identified four priority projects designed to significantly enhance the tourism attractiveness of Sambor Prei Kuk and its surrounding areas. The first project focuses on improving the overall tourism experience across the heritage site, including landscaping, infrastructure upgrades and enhancements to visitor facilities. These improvements aim to make the area more accessible and visually appealing while preserving the historical integrity of the temple complex.
A second initiative introduces digital tourism experiences that allow visitors to explore the history of the ancient Chenla civilisation through interactive technology. The programme will highlight the story of Pre-Angkorian culture and provide deeper insight into the archaeological importance of the site.
The third project involves a large-scale digital promotion campaign under the theme “Sambor Prei Kuk: Pre-Angkorian Chenla.” This campaign is designed to raise international awareness of the heritage site and attract travellers interested in Cambodia’s early history before the rise of Angkor.
The fourth initiative focuses on raising service standards across the region through the national “clean cities, clean villages, clean resorts, good services and good hospitality” campaign. This includes improved sanitation, better visitor facilities and higher quality tourism services throughout the surrounding communities.
Creating a Connected Cultural Tourism Ecosystem

Infrastructure improvements will also extend to ticketing areas, cycling routes and scenic lakes such as West Prang Lake and East Prang Lake. Landscaping, tree planting, parking facilities and enhanced sanitation systems are all part of the broader vision to create a welcoming and sustainable tourism destination.
The tourism ecosystem will be closely linked with the nearby urban tourism zone in Stung Sen, helping to create a more comprehensive travel experience for visitors exploring central Cambodia.
A New Museum to Showcase Pre-Angkorian History
Another proposal under consideration is the development of a dedicated museum and visitor information centre near the heritage site. The proposed Sambor Prei Kuk: Pre-Angkorian Chenla Museum would highlight the history of the Chenla civilisation, the archaeological importance of the temple complex and the cultural traditions of the surrounding region.
The centre would also provide space for exhibitions, educational displays and the sale of locally made souvenirs, helping to support community-based tourism initiatives while enriching the cultural experience for travellers.
Encouraging Visitors to Stay Longer

Officials are implementing what has been described as a “Time Trap Strategy,” encouraging tourists to extend their visit to at least one overnight stay. By expanding accommodation options, improving visitor services and creating additional cultural attractions, the province hopes to transform the area into a multi-day travel destination.
Improved infrastructure, including roads, electricity, clean water supply and reliable internet services, will also play an important role in supporting the region’s tourism growth.
With its ancient temples set among forest landscapes and its rich cultural heritage dating back more than a thousand years, Sambor Prei Kuk represents one of Cambodia’s most significant yet under-explored destinations. The new projects signal a strong commitment by the government to unlock the site’s full tourism potential while protecting its historical legacy.
