Seamless Travel Across Borders: Cambodia and Lao PDR Expand QR Code Payments for Tourists

Cambodia, Laos launch 2nd phase of cross-border QR code payments. NBC
Travelling between Cambodia and Lao PDR has become easier and more convenient with the launch of the second phase of cross-border QR code payments. The new initiative allows Lao travellers to shop across Cambodia using their own currency, marking a significant step forward for digital tourism and regional integration in Southeast Asia.

A Major Step in Cross-Border Digital Payments

The second phase of the Cambodia–Laos cross-border QR code payment system was officially launched in Phnom Penh by Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, and Bounkham Vorachit, Governor of the Bank of the Lao PDR. This full rollout builds on earlier cooperation and expands the use of QR-based payments between the two neighbouring countries.

Under the new phase, Lao citizens can use their mobile banking applications to scan KHQR codes at approximately 4.5 million merchants throughout Cambodia. Payments are made directly in their home currency, removing the need for cash exchange or international cards.

A Smoother Experience for Travellers

For tourists, the expanded QR code payment system delivers a seamless, fast, and secure way to pay for goods and services while travelling. From hotels and restaurants to markets and attractions, digital payments simplify everyday transactions and reduce the friction often associated with cross-border travel.

This convenience is expected to enhance the overall visitor experience, encouraging longer stays and higher spending while making Cambodia an even more attractive destination for Lao travellers.

New Opportunities for Tourism and Trade

The initiative also opens new opportunities for merchants in both Cambodia and Lao PDR. By accepting cross-border QR payments, businesses can reach a broader customer base and benefit from increased tourism-driven spending. The system supports small and medium-sized enterprises in particular, helping them participate more actively in the regional tourism economy.

According to the National Bank of Cambodia, the project not only facilitates travel but also fosters trade and investment between the two countries, strengthening economic cooperation at multiple levels.

Strengthening Cultural and Economic Ties

Beyond its practical benefits, the cross-border QR code payment system serves as a digital bridge connecting the cultures, economies, and people of Cambodia and Lao PDR. By simplifying financial interactions, it encourages closer people-to-people exchanges and supports the growth of cross-border tourism.

The initiative also aligns with ASEAN’s broader vision of regional integration, contributing to the development of an interconnected digital payment ecosystem across Southeast Asia.

A Step Toward ASEAN Tourism Integration

With the full launch of the second phase, both Cambodian and Lao citizens can now pay for goods in each other’s countries using their own currencies by scanning QR codes. This innovation reflects the region’s commitment to modern, traveller-friendly infrastructure that supports sustainable tourism growth.

As digital payments become an essential part of the travel experience, Cambodia and Lao PDR are setting a regional example by making cross-border journeys more convenient, secure, and connected.
