Lighting the Sound Albany: A World-First Nighttime Spectacle on Australia’s Southern Coast

Australia’s Southern Coast
An Australian-Exclusive Art Event Illuminates King George Sound

From 13 to 29 March 2026, Albany / Kinjarling will host one of the most ambitious outdoor art installations ever created. Lighting the Sound is a landmark cultural event that will transform King George Sound and its surrounding coastline into a vast, immersive canvas of light, delivering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for travellers seeking extraordinary moments in regional Western Australia.

Created by world-renowned Finnish light artist Kari Kola, the installation will unfold across nine magical nights, igniting the night skies in a way never before attempted on this scale.

A Global Artistic Vision Meets Ancient Coastal Landscapes

Lighting the Sound is anticipated to be the largest lighting installation in the world, designed exclusively for Australia and inspired by Albany’s dramatic coastal geography. Using light as a storytelling medium, the installation will reveal cliffs, headlands and iconic landmarks around King George Sound in an ethereal display that responds to the natural environment rather than overpowering it.

Kari Kola’s work is internationally celebrated for its sensitivity to landscape, often showcased in remote and culturally significant locations. In Albany, the result will be a powerful dialogue between contemporary art and one of Australia’s most storied coastal settings.

A New Reason to Visit Albany After Dark

Lighting the Sound Albany
Traditionally known for its maritime history, wild southern ocean and rich Noongar heritage, Albany is fast emerging as a destination for major cultural events. Lighting the Sound invites visitors to experience the region from a new perspective, encouraging twilight exploration, evening gatherings and extended stays during one of the most pleasant travel periods of the year.

March offers mild weather, fewer crowds and ideal conditions for outdoor events, making it an excellent time to plan a South West journey around this extraordinary installation.

Why Lighting the Sound Is a Must-See Travel Experience

Lighting the Sound is not a festival or performance, it is a large-scale, site-responsive artwork that can only be experienced in Albany. Its limited nine-night run adds to its exclusivity, positioning it as a bucket-list event for art lovers, photographers and travellers drawn to rare, place-based experiences.

For visitors seeking something beyond the ordinary, this event reinforces Albany’s growing reputation as a destination where culture, nature and innovation converge.
