Cairns Gears Up for Global Glory: New Mountain Bike Finale Announced for 2026

The Oceania Continental Series Finale
Cairns is set to strengthen its reputation as one of Australia’s premier adventure sport destinations with the announcement of a brand-new international mountain bike event. From 16–19 April 2026, Smithfield Mountain Bike Park will host the Oceania Continental Series Finale, bringing elite competition, emerging talent, and global attention to Tropical North Queensland.

Supported by Cairns Regional Council, AusCycling, Tourism Events Queensland, and Tourism Tropical North Queensland, the event will deliver high-level racing while creating lasting benefits for the local community and visitor economy.

World-Class Racing Comes to Smithfield

The 2026 Oceania Continental Series Finale will feature the final round of the UCI Oceania Continental Series in both downhill and cross-country Olympic (XCO) disciplines. It will also form part of the AusCycling National Series, providing competitive opportunities across elite, under-23, under-19, junior, and emerging rider categories.

With valuable UCI points and potential World Cup starts on offer, the event is expected to attract top athletes from Australia, New Zealand, and across the Oceania region. Smithfield Mountain Bike Park’s steep, technical, and rainforest-lined trails provide a demanding test that mirrors the challenges of modern World Cup courses.

A Major Boost for the Cairns Community

The Oceania Continental Series Finale
Backed through Cairns Regional Council’s Major Events Sponsorship Program, the Oceania Continental Series Finale is designed to maximise community access and participation. Free spectator entry will allow residents and visitors to experience elite international racing up close, while local clubs, volunteers, and young riders gain hands-on involvement in a major sporting event.

The event is also expected to encourage increased use of Cairns’ world-class mountain bike infrastructure, supporting long-term participation in outdoor and active lifestyles across the region.

Elite Endorsement from the Mountain Bike Community

AusCycling’s Executive General Manager of Major Events, Steve Peterson, said the creation of the 2026 finale reflects strong demand within the mountain bike community and the unique appeal of Cairns as a host destination.

The event provides a vital pathway for riders preparing for international competition in Asia, Europe, and beyond, offering high-quality racing conditions on home soil.

Cairns local and elite downhill racer Mick Hannah welcomed the announcement, highlighting the legitimacy of the Smithfield venue. He described the track as steep, raw, and technically demanding, making it an ideal benchmark for riders preparing for the global circuit and an invaluable opportunity for the next generation of Australian talent.

Driving Tourism and Long-Term Legacy

Cairns Regional Council Mayor Amy Eden said the event will deliver meaningful economic and social benefits, supporting local businesses while creating opportunities for community involvement.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen also welcomed the addition of the event, noting its potential to attract visitors during the shoulder season and further enhance the region’s reputation for hosting exciting sporting events.

Beyond race weekend, the Oceania Continental Series Finale will leave a lasting legacy by showcasing Cairns as a year-round destination for mountain biking, adventure tourism, and world-class outdoor sport.

Plan Ahead for April 2026

Entries for the 2026 Oceania Continental Series Finale will open soon via the AusCycling website. With elite racing, community engagement, and spectacular tropical scenery, the event promises to be a standout on the international mountain bike calendar and a major drawcard for Cairns.
