The Hanoi Train Launches, Offering Tourists a Unique Cultural Journey

The Hanoi Train
A Novel Way to Explore Hanoi and Beyond

The Hanoi Train officially began operation on September 6, giving visitors a fresh and immersive way to explore Vietnam’s capital and its surrounding regions. This new tourism initiative, developed in collaboration with the Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR), allows travellers to journey east to Tu Son in Bac Ninh province while experiencing Hanoi’s rich cultural heritage in a unique setting.

Trial runs had begun on August 19, showcasing the potential of the train to popularise local history and culture. Designed to reinvigorate the railway as part of urban life, the project reflects the dedication of tourism and railway authorities to innovate, enhance service quality, and create memorable experiences for both domestic and international visitors.

Historic Inspiration and Luxurious Carriages

Operated by BHL Tourism Service Trading Joint Stock Company, the Hanoi Train draws inspiration from the ancient Thang Long Citadel. Its seven-carriage design includes five double-decker seating carriages named after historic city gates – Cau Den, Quan Chuong, Cau Giay, Cho Dua, and Dong Mac – each evoking Hanoi’s thousand-year legacy and the cultural richness of the Red River Delta.

Each carriage features a distinct interior theme with 40 to 60 seats, combining luxury and cultural storytelling. Two additional carriages are reserved for check-in, ensuring smooth operations and comfort for all passengers.

Cultural Experiences on a 40-Minute Journey

The Hanoi Train
Throughout the 40-minute trip, passengers enjoy traditional music and performances, including quan ho (love duet folk singing), ca tru (ceremonial singing), cheo (traditional opera), and xam (blind buskers’ singing). Travellers can also participate in hands-on activities such as creating Dong Hoo paintings, a folk art genre made with natural materials, and preparing Phu The cakes, symbolising eternal love and family happiness.

To complement the cultural immersion, the Hanoi Train serves local delicacies such as young sticky rice, jasmine-scented lotus tea, and seasonal snacks, providing a complete sensory experience of Hanoi’s culinary traditions.

Exploring Tu Son and Ly Dynasty Heritage

Upon arrival at Tu Son Station, travellers can explore the Do Temple, a significant historical and cultural site. The temple was a place of worship for eight kings of the Ly dynasty, reflecting a golden era in Vietnam’s history. Visitors gain insights into the dynasty’s origins and its enduring influence on Dai Viet’s culture, politics, and traditions.

Additional local cultural activities are available before passengers return to Hanoi, ensuring a full day of engagement and learning.

Tickets, Schedule, and Booking Information

The Hanoi Train operates two daily departures from Hanoi Station via Gia Lam and Yen Vien at 8am and 1.30pm. Return trips from Tu Son depart at 10.30am and 4.20pm.
