Survey: High Anxiety: 1 in 4 Aussies Admit to Taking Something to Cope with Flights

New research from Naturecan.com.au reveals that one in four Australians are taking something to cope with flights, but it's not primarily about white-knuckle fear, it's about sleep.

More than half (54%) of those who take medication or another substance are doing so to get through the flight unconscious, far outpacing those medicating for fear of flying (33%) or motion sickness (14%).

What emerges is a picture of Australians increasingly unwilling to endure air travel; they'd rather sleep through it or chemically manage the anxiety than tough it out in the skies.

Gen Z Leading the Trend, Millennials the Most Anxious

Gen Z are the most likely to take something for flights at 36%, followed by Millennials (28%), Gen X (24%), and Baby Boomers (17%).

But among those who do medicate, Millennials reveal the starkest anxiety pattern, with 44% doing it specifically to manage flight-related fear, the highest rate of any generation.

Older generations prioritise sleep over anxiety management, with around 55% of Millennials, Gen X and Boomers medicating to sleep through flights, compared to just 49% of Gen Z.

Women are also more likely to take something overall (26% versus 22% of men), with 35% citing anxiety compared to 30% of men.

Dylan de Vrieze, Country Manager at Naturecan.com.au, says the findings reveal changing attitudes toward air travel comfort, particularly as cost of living pressures push more Australians into economy seating.

"With fewer people able to afford business class comfort, sleeping through an economy flight has become the budget traveller's upgrade. Millennials are managing genuine flight anxiety at rates we haven't seen in other generations. The challenge is ensuring all travellers are making informed choices about what they're taking and exploring natural alternatives where appropriate."
