Luang Prabang Shines Bright: Laos’ Heritage City Achieves Green Destinations Silver Certification 2025–2027

Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang, the cultural jewel of Lao PDR, has taken a major step forward in its sustainability journey by earning the prestigious Green Destinations Silver certification for 2025–2027. Announced during the Sustainable Destinations Forum 2025 in Dubai, this achievement positions Luang Prabang as a regional leader in responsible tourism and underscores its commitment to balancing cultural preservation with visitor growth.

A Milestone Moment for Sustainable Tourism in Laos

The Silver certification marks a historic first for Laos. Luang Prabang is now the first city in the country—and among the few in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam—to reach this level of recognition. The award was accepted by Soudaphone Khomthavong, Director of the Luang Prabang Provincial Culture and Tourism Department, on behalf of the nation.

This remarkable accomplishment reflects years of dedication to protecting the city’s World Heritage values while developing tourism in a way that supports local people, safeguards natural resources and enhances cultural identity.

A Rigorous Evaluation to Meet Global Standards

To earn the Green Destinations Silver certification, Luang Prabang underwent one of the most comprehensive sustainability assessments in the global tourism industry. The city submitted detailed data covering more than 100 sub-indicators, all of which were examined through on-site inspections by the Green Destinations audit team.

Authorities were especially praised for maintaining a clean and well-managed city environment, implementing effective waste management systems and creating community-based tourism programs that involve local residents in decision-making. These initiatives ensure that tourism income directly benefits the people who call Luang Prabang home.

Community, Culture and Conservation at the Heart of Success

Community-based tourism has become a cornerstone of Luang Prabang’s sustainable approach. Local villages actively participate in tourism planning and product development, helping to preserve traditional crafts, protect cultural heritage and maintain natural landscapes.

The focus on sustainability has also strengthened the visitor experience. Travellers are drawn to Luang Prabang not only for its temples, waterfalls and French-Indochinese charm, but also for the city’s commitment to responsible tourism practices that ensure these attractions remain unspoiled for future generations.

Record Visitor Numbers and Strong Economic Growth

The recognition comes at a time of impressive tourism growth. During the first seven months of 2025, Luang Prabang welcomed 2,155,994 visitors, an increase of 983,483 compared to the same period in the previous year. Tourism revenue in the province reached LAK 1,108 billion, approximately USD 52.76 million.

This upward trend demonstrates that sustainable tourism and economic growth can go hand in hand when local culture, natural beauty and community involvement are placed at the centre of development strategies.

Aiming for Gold: The Road Ahead

With the Silver certification secured, Luang Prabang is now focused on achieving the Gold Level in 2026. Efforts are already underway to expand renewable energy use, enhance waste reduction measures and further elevate community participation in tourism initiatives.

The Green Destinations certification program, accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, includes Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and full Green Destination status. Luang Prabang’s steady progress puts it firmly on the path toward the highest recognitions in global sustainability.

By striving for the next level, the city sets a powerful example for destinations across Southeast Asia that aspire to protect their heritage while embracing a more sustainable future.
