Hpa-an Wins Prestigious ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities Award 2025

Kyaut Ka Latt Pagoda
Hpa-an, the capital of Kayin State in Myanmar, has been recognised as one of Southeast Asia’s leading green cities after receiving the 6th ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities Award for 2025. Known for its dramatic limestone mountains, serene riverfront and impressive cave systems, Hpa-an is now celebrated not only for its natural beauty but also for its commitment to responsible urban development and environmental protection.

A Significant Regional Honour for Environmental Excellence

The ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities Award, presented every three years since 2008, highlights cities that demonstrate strong efforts in clean water management, green spaces, air quality and sustainable urban planning. This year’s award was announced on 3 October in Langkawi, Malaysia by the ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities.

Hpa-an’s achievement places it among Southeast Asia’s most forward-thinking urban centres, reinforcing Myanmar’s growing focus on sustainable development across key destinations.

Protecting Nature While Supporting Urban Growth

Local authorities in Kayin State emphasise that Hpa-an’s recognition comes as a result of long-term collaboration between government departments, community groups and environmental organisations. Planned initiatives focus on maintaining clean water and air, preserving biodiversity, protecting natural ecosystems and safeguarding green spaces that are vital to residents and visitors.

Many of these areas are already popular tourist attractions, making environmental management especially important as the region prepares for future growth in domestic and international tourism.

A Rising Ecotourism Destination Surrounded by Natural Wonders

Hpa-an’s landscapes play a central role in its environmental efforts. Towering limestone cliffs, tranquil lakes and expansive riverbank scenery draw travellers who seek nature and outdoor adventure. The Myanmar Tourism Federation is promoting new ecotourism projects in the region to highlight these unique features while encouraging sustainable travel habits.

These initiatives aim to inspire visitors to explore thoughtfully and help protect the delicate ecosystems that make Hpa-an such an appealing destination.

A Community Committed to a Greener Future

Residents have welcomed the award as a symbol of pride and a reminder of the city’s future goals. Local communities understand that sustainability contributes not only to environmental well-being but also to improved quality of life and long-term tourism potential.

With the support of the ASEAN award, Hpa-an plans to further enhance its environmental programs, positioning the city as a model for sustainable urban development in Myanmar and the wider region.
