During China’s eight-day golden week, picturesque areas such as Dali and Lijiang witnessed an influx of couples seeking meaningful wedding experiences surrounded by natural beauty. Instead of traditional banquet hall ceremonies, many couples chose to say “I do” on grasslands at high altitudes or beside still alpine waters. For many, the emotional value of these iconic landscapes far outweighed conventional wedding settings.

One such couple, Chen Xing and Li Mengyuan, travelled from Shanxi Province to wed at the base of Yulong Snow Mountain at 3,200 meters above sea level. Their ceremony epitomised the rising trend of destination weddings that blend travel, photography and cultural immersion with the most important celebration of their lives.

The impact on local livelihoods has been significant. Bridal makeup artist Wang Yihan from Lijiang shared that her yearly bookings surged from around 200 to nearly 1,000. Prices for beauty and photography services have risen as demand expands, providing sustainable income for skilled professionals.

Dali alone hosts over 100 mature wedding service companies, supporting hundreds of partner businesses. In 2024, the city welcomed more than 5,000 destination weddings, provided travel photography for 200,000 couples and generated an estimated 1.8 billion yuan in revenue.

The growing popularity of destination weddings reflects evolving attitudes among China’s younger generation. Couples are increasingly preferring intimate, personalised celebrations over traditional large-scale banquets that can be expensive and formal. Combining weddings with travel has become a cost-effective yet meaningful alternative. Many couples report that their ceremonies, including travel for close family members, cost far less than traditional hometown weddings.

These new preferences are helping Yunnan reposition itself not just as a tourism destination but as a place where lifelong memories are crafted against some of China’s most romantic scenery.
