New Khon Kaen–Vientiane Bus Route Strengthens Thailand–Lao PDR Travel Connectivity

A major boost to regional travel has arrived with the launch of a brand-new international bus service linking Khon Kaen in northeastern Thailand with Vientiane, the capital of the Lao PDR. The Transport Co., Ltd., known locally as Baw Khaw Sor, officially introduced the route on 10 October 2025, marking an important milestone in tourism, trade and cross-border mobility between the two neighbouring nations.

 

A Strategic Travel Link Between Two Growing Travel Hubs

The inauguration ceremony at Khon Kaen Bus Terminal 3 was presided over by Phanthep Saokosol, Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen Province. The new route represents the fifth official international bus connection between Thailand and Laos, operated in partnership with the Vientiane Capital Bus Enterprise.

According to managing director Attawit Rakjamroon, the service has been launched at the perfect time to accommodate the upcoming high travel season. The route is set to offer travellers a convenient, fast and safe transportation option, while also enhancing economic and tourism connections across the Mekong region.

 

A Convenient and Affordable Cross-Border Journey

The newly established Khon Kaen–Vientiane route spans 194 kilometres and takes approximately four hours to complete, making it an accessible and appealing choice for both tourists and locals. With a fare of just 180 baht, the service provides an economical alternative to flying or private car travel, especially for visitors eager to explore cultural attractions on both sides of the border.

The Thai service operates a 42-seat air-conditioned coach departing Khon Kaen at 8:15 AM and returning from Vientiane at 2:45 PM daily. On the Lao side, a 25-seat minibus departs Vientiane at 8:15 AM and returns from Khon Kaen at 3:00 PM, ensuring daily, reliable cross-border access for passengers.

 

Enhancing Regional Tourism and Economic Growth

As a major commercial centre in northeastern Thailand, Khon Kaen stands to benefit significantly from improved international transport links. The new route is expected to encourage more travellers to explore both Khon Kaen’s vibrant city attractions and Vientiane’s cultural and historical landmarks, ultimately driving local economic activity.

For travellers, the service opens additional opportunities for seamless multi-destination itineraries across Thailand and Laos. It also supports regional tourism strategies focused on strengthening connectivity between neighbouring ASEAN countries.

 

Future Integration with Khon Kaen Airport

Looking ahead, The Transport Co. plans to integrate the Khon Kaen–Vientiane route with the local airport. This initiative aims to provide air travellers with smooth onward transport options, enhancing convenience and aligning with the Ministry of Transport’s broader policy to promote multimodal connectivity.

By linking land and air travel, the new route is set to position Khon Kaen as a major gateway for cross-border tourism and business travel into Laos.
