It was built to replace the Old Dunn Bull Inn, which was flooded when the Dam was completed.
Walls were constructed using local stone and the roof was made of Cumberland slate from old farm buildings in Mardale.
Coping stones in the gardens were also reused from submerged Mardale walls and antique bell pulls removed from buildings in the valley were used in the new hotel.
Stephen O’Sullivan, the current owner of the hotel is a restoration and historic building enthusiast, who intends to retain as much character and charm as possible, while also upgrading to modern expectations.
In January 2023, Mark Greenaway opened Mark Greenaway at the Haweswater Hotel, a new fine dining restaurant at The Haweswater Hotel.
Star dishes will include new creations alongside some of his signature dishes including BBQ shiitake mushrooms on toast, 11-hour slow roast pork belly and sticky toffee pudding soufflé.
The hotel has also opened Brasserie 37’, named after the year the hotel was completed. Guests at the Haweswater will find warm hearths of roaring log fires, an art deco bar and a relaxing environment.
The controversial construction of the Haweswater dam was started in 1929 and, at the time there was much public outcry about the decision as the valley of Mardale was populated by the farming villages.
All the farms and houses in the villages of Mardale and Measand, and the Dun Bull Inn were pulled down. Coffins were removed from the graveyard, and buried elsewhere, and Mardale church was demolished.
At times of drought, when the water level is low, many people go back to see what is left of the village of Mardale.
Haweswater is now one of the largest lakes at four miles long and 1/2 mile wide, and has a maximum depth of 200 feet.
