Strawberry Hill House, Twickenham, London - a beautiful example of Gothic Revival architecture

Over 50 Old Master paintings on long term loan from Dulwich Picture Gallery, and a further eight works from a private English collection, have gone on display at Strawberry Hill House.

Among the paintings which now can be viewed, is a set of twenty-six British monarchs. 

Strawberry Hill House & Garden was the 18th century home of writer, antiquarian and politician Horace Walpole (1717–1797). 

This building, known as Britain’s finest example of Georgian Gothic revival architecture, is home to a collection of paintings and objects. 

It is part of a long-term project, by the Strawberry Hill Trust, to return some of the 6000 objects from the collection he amassed during his lifetime and, where possible, recreate the original atmosphere of the house, when the rooms were filled with works of art. 

In 1842, following Walpole’s death, the contents of the House were sold off in an auction, known as the Great Sale. 

Strawberry Hill House is a beautiful example of Gothic Revival architecture with a wonderful story to tell through its inhabitants, design, collection and restoration.
