The Fun-tabulous Hit Musical Hairspray

Looking for a fun night out? Then get along to see the hit musical Hairspray now on at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney.

Hairspray is a fun-tabulous comedy, a drama, a musical and a dance extravaganza. It is jam packed with music and dance from the 1960's era.

It tells the story of young teenager Tracey Turnblad who is dreaming of only one thing - to appear on a The Corny Collins Show, a popular young peoples dance show in America. Tracey is a 16 year old "pleasantly plump" teenager who does not fit the public image of what a younger dancer should appear as. She does end up on the dance show, and along the way protests racial segregation. She finds a lover and discovers many friends.

Hairspray began its life as a comedy film in 1988, then was turned into a Broadway musical in 2002, then a film in 2007.

This Sydney production stars some well known people to Australian audiences, including Shane Jacobson as Edna Turnblad, Todd McKenney as Wilbur Turnblad and Rhonda Burchmore as Velma Von Tussle. These all act there parts brilliantly, combining song and dance, drama and laughs. The other leads and ensemble perform with gusto giving out huge amounts of energy. They all offer 110% of fun exuberance on stage, and must be exhausted after each performance.

The combination of the colorful sets, dazzling lights and up-beat music from the band makes for a thoroughly entertaining evening (or afternoon if you attend a matinee performance). Hairspray features the toe-tapping feel-good songs “Good Morning, Baltimore”, “Big, Blonde and Beautiful” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat”.

Hairspray is a fun show to be enjoyed by all ages, from those who danced there way through the sixties to those those who like the hits of a bygone era.

Hairspray is on at the Lyirc Theatre at The Star in Sydney up until 2 April 2023.
