Sport Tourism is now a trend in the global tourism industry in general and in Vietnam in particular. With diverse terrain, majestic natural landscapes, mountains mile after mile, several waterfalls, emerald rivers and beautiful routes… Cao Bang Province (North - East) possesses high potentials to develop sport tourism.

In recent years, sport tourism has gained a popular new tourism trend, especially for those who love exercise and travel enthusiasts. Tourism is not only about experiencing food, culture, exploring nature, but also combining activities of climbing, cycling, jogging, etc … The appeal of sport tourism comes from new experiences, challenging for travellers. Observing or participating in sport activities while enjoying the multi-terrain nature, being competitive, fetches excitement to people.

As a province located in the North-East region of Vietnam, blessed by nature with marvellous majestic mountains, winding passes and a river system with stable flow, Cao Bang Province has rich potential to develop sport tourism. In the past few years, Cao Bang Province has been organising several sport tourism events such as: The “Conquering the top of Phja Oac” 1st marathon in 2019; The “Conquering the top of Slam Cao” marathon in 2019; Bicycle racing “Back to the root” to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Dong Khe Victory in 2020; Bicycle racing “Returning to Pac Po” to celebrate 80th anniversary of Uncle Ho returning to Vietnam to lead the Vietnamese revolution in association with the 60th anniversary of Uncle Ho visiting Cao Bang (28th January 2021); Ping Pong tournament of national clubs in Cao Bang Province in 2019; International mountain bike race of Phuc Hoa (Vietnam) - Lungzcou (China) in 2019 with over 300 athletes participating, including 50 Chinese athletes.

Hoang Chai (Nguyen Binh District) was one of the athletes participated in the “Conquering the top of Phja Oac” 1st marathon in 2019 and the “Conquering the top of Mau Son” (Lang Son Province) in 2020, shared: I am very lucky to have opportunities to participate in 2 marathon contests in Cao Bang and Lang Son provinces. Besides the prize, other athletes and I have been able to exercise while admiring and conquering the grandeur and poetic beauty of the natural landscape. In my opinion, this will be an interesting type of tourism for visitors to experience when visiting Cao Bang Province.

Particularly, in April 2021, the 33rd National Cycling Tournament for the Ho Chi Minh City Television Cup “Mountains and Rivers on one strip”, round 1 in Cao Bang Province gathered 15 lead racing teams in the country. This special event created a joyful and exciting atmosphere for the people of Cao Bang City on the occasion of celebrating the Liberation of the South and reunification of the country on 30th April. The race was live on HTV9, HTV Sports, HTV Sports Youtube channel, HTV Sports Fanpage, HTVC mobile apps… which has contributed to promoting beautiful places, culture and traditional cuisine of the mountainous region of Cao Bang to a nationwide audience.

These competitions show the potential to develop sport tourism in Cao Bang Province. Suitable forms of sports such as marathons, cycling, trekking, kayaking, mountain climbing, golfing, paragliding… on majestic routes, passes, valleys and peaceful and neglected hills.

The competitions held lately have contributed to promoting and introducing the beauty of Cao Bang Province in general and the image of Cao Bang panorama recognised as UNESCO Global Geopark in particular; thereby developing sustainable tourism through the protection of natural and human ecology.

Mr. Truong The Vinh, Deputy Director of the Cao Bang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DOCST) said: Maintaining organisation and replication of Marathon, cycling, surveying and developing a number of other sport forms such as: Paragliding, boating on rivers and lakes… is the correct direction to increase its attractiveness, stimulate Cao Bang tourism. The DOCST will closely coordinate with relevant localities, agencies and units to ensure the organisation of tournaments and sport activities for tourists and athletes. At the same time, paying attention to improving the quality of services, diversifying tourism products, and creating great leverage for tourism development and economic growth in the short, medium and long term.
