Have you ever wondered what a prison housing dangerous criminals looked like in the Meiji era?

Abashiri Prison Museum

At the Abashiri Prison Museum, visitors can witness the 24 historical buildings of the former Abashiri Prison, including the Prison House and Central Guard House of the original Abashiri Prison, that was constructed about 120 years ago. 

Eight of these buildings are designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
