Portugal: The Coolest Place to Go in 2019

Forbes elected Portugal as the coolest place to visit in 2019
Forbes magazine has compiled a list of the ten coolest countries to visit this year, and Portugal ranked first. But there is more ... what made the US magazine choose our country as the favorite was the fact that there is a specific site that is not to be missed: the Azores Archipelago.

Forbes contacted several representatives of tour operators and travel agencies and, based on the choice and the interests of tourists, drew up the list of countries that are almost like 'mandatory'.

“Resembling the otherworldly landscapes of Avatar, the Azores islands, an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, are topping the lists of adventure travelers for 2019,” says Melissa Biggs Bradley, the founder of the members-only travel company Indagare.

The World Travel Awards are prizes awarded by industry professionals who are often considered the 'Oscars' of tourism. They began to be attributed in 1993, distinguishing the work developed in the tourist industry, in order to stimulate the competitiveness and the quality of the tourism. The winners are selected on a worldwide scale.

Le Monumental Palace: The new luxury hotel in Porto
The first hotel of the French chain Maison Albar Hotels in Portugal opened in November, in Porto. The five-star hotel has 76 rooms, a spa, a bar, a brasserie and a fine French restaurant.

In the middle of Avenida dos Aliados, in one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, which for decades was abandoned, it opened in November of last year a luxury hotel, determined to recover the grandeur of other times. Le Monumental Palace, has been decorated to recreate the elegance and iconic art deco ambience of the 1930s, retaining some of the building's original features.

Those who pass the street are invited to enter through the large doors of the Monumental Café, named after the old homonymous café, installed there in the 1930s, and considered, at the time, one of the most luxurious of the Iberian Peninsula. Today it presents itself as a brasserie where you can find suggestions for a coffee, lunch, snack or dinner, with traditional French flavors, from pastry to other specialties such as foie gras.

The five-star hotel has 76 rooms, of which 13 are suites, and there you can walk through the corridors that remind you of the East Express carriages. There is also a library, gym and Le Monumental Nuxe SPA, with indoor heated pool, sauna, Turkish bath, two treatment rooms and a Vichy shower.

In addition to the Café Monumental, the hotel has two more dining areas: the Bar Americain, where classic and signature cocktails are served, and some appetizers to accompany, and the Le Monument restaurant, dedicated to French haute cuisine, with the signature of the renowned chef Julien Montbabut, distinguished with a Michelin star with his Le Restaurant in Paris.

The One Palácio da Anunciada - The new 5-star hotel in Lisbon
The new 5-star hotel in Lisbon was born in an abandoned palace, at Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, right in the center of Lisbon. The One Palácio da Anunciada was erected in a building of 1533 that already had 18 thousand books and works of Rubens and Titiano.

Its gardens also housed a sculpture of Bernini built in Rome, but the earthquake of 1755 left serious damage to the structure of the building and dictated the destruction of the books.

In 2015, the H1O Hotels group acquired the building, with the aim of rehabilitating it and making it "a reference within the national and international hotel offer".

The new hotel is next to the Restauradores Square and is the second unit of the Spanish chain in Portugal - the first was the H10 Duque de Loulé, which was built in Lisbon in 2015. With five stars, The One Palácio da Anunciada will have a total of 83 rooms, five of which are suites.

There is also a gastronomic restaurant, a gourmet cocktail bar and a wine and tapas bar, as well as purpose-built spaces for meetings and events. Outside, you will find an amazing 2,500-square-foot garden, which includes a protected Centennial Drago. As well as a pool, pool bar and a spa: the Despacio Spa at The One.

The decor is luxurious and with attention to detail. All the original marks of the building were preserved during the restoration. The ceilings are the most impressive part of the classical architecture structure.
