New season, new stories

The nature of our transitional city means there’s always something new to be discovered, and the shape of Christchurch is constantly evolving.

Art in the city is the perfect example - Owen Dippie’s beautiful street art ballerina is almost hidden from site as a new building begins to bloom in front of it. Take the time to go past this amazing piece, as you might be one of the last to see it in all its full glory!

With the extra hour of light in the evening, head out for a walk in the city and pause under the neon lights of British artist Martin Creed’s new piece on the Worcester Boulevard side of the Christchurch Art Gallery.

Over the next few weeks, contemporary art will pop up all over the city centre thanks to SCAPE 8 public art. Titled New Intimacies, the project aims to enhance urban centres with engaging and exciting instillation. Highly regarded British sculptor Anthony Gormley is creating a permanent piece titled Stay for the central city as part of the project. The full line up of SCAPE 8 events can be viewed here.

New Zealand artist Judy Millar's Call me Snake is taking shape at the top of New Regent Street. The nine meter sculpture is patterned with photos of Judy's paint brush strokes, and the work is her first public piece.
