Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival will celebrate the city’s rich Asian cultures with more than 80 family-friendly events in what is the largest Lunar New Year celebration outside Asia.
This year an exhibition of the Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors will wow audiences during their Australian debut at Dawes Point, while crowds of more than 130,000 will be drawn to the internationally-renowned Twilight Parade’s spectacle of floats, lanterns, dancers, building projections and fireworks.
Also part of the festival from 13 February to 1 March are dragon boat races, events for children, tours, performances, workshops and a feast of sensational Asian food.
“The City of Sydney celebrates Chinese New Year in spectacular style,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said. From its beginnings as a small community event in Chinatown, our festival has grown to rival those in Hong Kong and Shanghai, with food, art, performance, tours and more.
“Our Twilight Parade, Lunar Streets and Lanterns of the Terracotta Warrior are just part of the festivities that embrace the cultures of the many countries that observe the Lunar calendar. This year, Chinatown, Thaitown and Koreatown are joining a feast of entertainment and flavours for our first ever Lunar Streets event.”
The Lord Mayor also said the Festival was an important opportunity to reinforce the deep and important relationship the City enjoys with Municipal, Provincial and National Governments in China.
