Walking the walk - CHOC Walk in the Park

Just before dawn on Sunday, Oct. 12, nearly 16,000 people gathered at the Disneyland Resort for the annual CHOC Walk in the Park – a 3.1-mile walk through Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in support of Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC).

For the past 24 years, funds raised by CHOC Walk have benefitted CHOC Children’s, a regional pediatric health care system serving children and families in Southern California and beyond. Disneyland Resort has been hosting the Walk for the last 13 years with this year’s course covering just over three miles inside Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. The route was peppered with several photo ops with beloved Disney characters along the way (and even a rare sneak peek backstage!).

The event is the biggest annual fundraising effort for CHOC Children’s. This year alone 800 teams participated in the Walk at the “Happiest Place on Earth,” pledging their support by raising funds and walking. The funds raised go toward supporting several patient and family programs and allowing for the adoption of the latest technologies to advance the health of patients at CHOC Children’s.

2014’s CHOC Walk Ambassador, 18-year-old Kailualani Tagaloa (also known as “Baby K”), helped kick off the Walk with her new friends, Lilo and Stitch.

Also on hand for the opening ceremony: Disney Channel’s Caroline Sunshine (pictured far left, above), Disneyland Resort Ambassadors Sachiko White and Megan Navarette, Disneyland Resort President Michael Colglazier, CHOC Children’s CEO Kim Cripe; and of course, Mickey and Minnie.

At the end of the 5k walk, the event continued in Downtown Disney District where event sponsors, hospital support groups, shops and restaurants had special offers for Walk participants.

The event raised more than $2 million for the hospital, totaling more than $22 million since the walk began in 1990. If you missed the Walk but would still like to donate to CHOC Walk, visit chocwalk.org by Oct. 31.
