WATERSIDE WALK WETS ‘APP’ETITE FOR ANTIQUITY

Visitors to The Rocks will be able to step back in time and enjoy the stories of the people that shaped the waterfront’s early development with an interactive, free app from Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.

Launching the app SHFA CEO Catherine Gallagher said the self-guided walking tour provided a wonderful insight into the early days of European settlement around Sydney Cove.

“The Rocks is a special place like no other in the world,” Ms Gallagher said.

“This new interactive walking experience allows people to enjoy the rich history of Sydney’s waterfront at their own pace.

“It is a spectacular way to enjoy these stories and showcase the unique attributes of The Rocks to the 14 million visitors here every year.”

The Walking The Rocks app is a self-guided, interactive walking tour that runs along the western foreshore of Sydney Cove from First Fleet Park to Campbell’s Cove.

Using GPS technology, the app alerts the user to nine stops and 18 stories along the way. The stories are available in audio or text.

It also automatically displays historical images and photographs on the walker’s device to give a sense of what the area once looked like.

Ms Gallagher said the app will provide a different type of experience for local and international visitors alike.

“There is a huge variety of things to do in The Rocks with its mix of casual and fine dining, intimate bars and retail shops offering a range of bespoke and hand-made items through the cobblestone laneways.”
Walking The Rocks app is available for free download from the App Store or Google Play.
