With the Sydney-Australian premiere season of Matilda The Musical secured by Destination NSW set to open in July 2015, media and industry gathered inside the historic Pier 2/3, in Sydney’s Walsh Bay arts precinct this week for the tickets on sale launch.
Guests were treated to two live performances by the show’s Australian composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, with ‘Quiet’ and ‘When I grow up’ - songs he penned for the record award-winning musical production of Roald Dahl’s famous novel, Matilda.
The story of Matilda - an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny - has inspired and encouraged people of all ages for many years. Matilda The Musical has also proven to be an enormous success, with productions in London’s West End and on Broadway, playing to 20,000 people every week.
The Sydney production is expected to be a strong draw card for interstate, intrastate and international visitors.
Tim Minchin said: “Last year I fulfilled a dream of acting in a Stoppard at the Sydney Theatre Company. Long before anyone took much notice of my silly tunes, Sydney offered me some of the most edifying and hilarious experiences of my career. The thought that in less than a year, the Lyric's curtain will be opening on our darling Matilda feels just perfect."
