PRAWN STAR BRINGS SEXY BACK TO FRESH SEAFOOD

There is something fishy going on at the Cairns Marlin Marina with the launch of Prawn Star; the city’s first ever floating seafood market selling a selection of ready-to-eat cooked prawns, raw prawns, mud crabs, fish and various seafoods straight-off-the-boat.

Owner Danny Moore said the concept has been three years in the making and with a change of government, the support of Ports North Chairman, Brett Moller and Cairns Regional Council, has become a reality.

According to Danny this is not a new idea to Australia but a first for Cairns.

“We set about finding the perfect trawler which would give locals and tourists a close up experience into the workings of these classic examples of our Queensland fishing heritage. I found just the boat in Moreton Bay. Formerly known as the ‘Lewis Venture’ and recently renamed ‘Prawn Star ’ she is a classic timber ‘sharpie’ style trawler that was built by Norman Wrights and Sons in Brisbane on a 1960’s design and for many years was regarded among the local fishermen of Brisbane as the ‘Pride of Moreton Bay’. When I discovered her she was derelict and hadn’t been moved for three years. After extensive refurbishment and modification on the slip in Cabbage Tree creek near Brisbane Airport we steamed her back to Cairns – a journey that was not without its fair share of adventures! After another month of work to her decks in Cairns, to make her compliant to all Council food service regulations, we were able to move her into her present position at E Finger.”

Managers Dave and Michelle Levy said they are in their element at the helm of ‘Prawn Star’ and source only Wild Ocean Caught Australian seafood from various local trawlers and suppliers. As a chef, Michelle loves giving tips to the punters about the best ways to prepare and cook their local seafood.

“While we haven’t been open for long, the culture of ‘ocean to plate’ is taking hold with visitors and locals who love to wander along the marina for their lunch of prawns while taking the opportunity to grab a mud crab or some fish for dinner. It is all very laid back and easy – think bare feet and boardies.”

Prawn Star Cairns is located on E Finger, Marlin Marina Cairns (next to Salt House) and is open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm. For more information, contact Prawn Star Manager, Dave Levy on mob: 0456 421 172
