Sydney’s signature autumn racing carnival event “The Championships” has been secured for 2015 after Premier Mike Baird announced that the NSW Government would invest $10 million towards staging the event.
“The Championships will become Racing’s premier event in NSW and the NSW Government is proud to be supporting its continuation,” Mr Baird said.
The Championships, an initiative of Racing NSW, brings together the best of the best for two days of racing at Royal Randwick and this year over 50,000 people attended the two-day event.
This latest NSW Government investment will be directed towards a new permanent quarantine station to allow foreign horses to participate in racing in NSW year round without having to go through Victoria.
A regional racing carnival will also benefit from the investment with Country winning horses running at a signature regional horse race at Randwick during "The Championships". While marketing and promotion will be undertaken to maximise visitor numbers from overseas, interstate and regional NSW.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said, “Every racing city needs a fantastic racing event and the “The Championchips” is Sydney’s.”
“Part of the BMW Sydney Carnival, “The Championships” is a pinnacle racing event, igniting Sydney with six days of racing fever which includes fashion, entertainment and world class action on the track.
