EVENTS TO LURE VISITORS AS ATHERTON TABLELANDS ROLLS INTO FULL SWING

There will be food, entertainment, bucking broncos and Christmas in July, but best of all there will be thousands of grey nomads passing through the Atherton Tablelands over the coming months as the tourist season gets into full swing.

Tropical Tablelands Tourism chair and Member for Barron River said the biggest event luring these lurcrative travellers to the region was the annual Christmas in July celebrations, now in their 16th year.

“Hundreds of motorhomes from all over Australia will continue to roll into the region over the coming weeks and most likely in time for the start of this weekend’s Mareeba Rodeo, which is one of the biggest events held on the Atherton Tablelands, drawing a crowd of thousands.

Christmas in July is held from July 24-27 at Mareeba’s Davis Park. There is a dinner on the Saturday night and an open day on Sunday from 9am to 3pm, which allows people to come and look in the motorhomes to see what the nomadic life is all about. The township of Yungaburra will also be celebrating this annual event, spreading Christmas cheer with decorations, festive treats, dedicated restaurant menus and more.

“Christmas in July is the economic boost a lot of businesses and tourism attractions rely on every year. The nomads tend to stay in the region for many weeks, visiting key attractions and landmarks,” Mr Trout added.

In addition to the July events, Mr Trout said there were a number of other key events over the coming months that would have people returning including the Kuranda Festival on October 11-12, Taste of Tablelands on October 19, the Tablelands Folk Festival from October 23-24, The Tinaroo Barra Bash on October 31-November 2, and the Soldier On Triathlon from November 22-23.

Next month The 2014 ELEV8XCM! (mountain biking) will also take place from August 16-17.

“This year’s mountain biking event returns to the excellent facilities at the Atherton Gun Club with the race course taking in some of the best trails that the ATFMTBP has to offer,” Mr Trout said.

“Come and enter solo or in a team for eight solid hours of mountain biking on some of the best trails in the country.”
