Two Sydney based musicals, Strictly Ballroom the Musical and Sweet Charity, have swept the Helpmann Awards nominations receiving seven and nine nominations respectively.
Among the hefty list of nominations for both productions, Baz Luhrmann received a best director nomination for the musical rendition of his famous film. Director of Sweet Charity Dean Bryant was also nominated, as was multi Academy Award winner Catherine Martin, who received a nod for best costume design.
Assistant Minister for Tourism and Major Events Hon. Katrina Hodgkinson, who spoke at the Sydney-based nominations night also welcomed the announcement that Vivid Sydney 2013 had won the Helpmann’s Best Special Event Award.
Minister Hodgkinson said, “Vivid Sydney, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest festival of light, music and ideas was attended by 800,000 people in 2013. Vivid, which is owned and managed by Destination NSW, goes from strength to strength each year, with this year’s festival attracting over 1.4 million people.”
Ms Hodgkinson also said that The Helpmann Awards helped to set the benchmark for Australia's live performance industry, by recognising the cream of Australian live performances each year.
“Supporting this prestigious Australian awards ceremony is part the NSW Government’s commitment to the arts and further strengthens our State’s position as the creative capital of Australia,” she said.
The Helpmann Awards ceremony will be held in Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on 18 August 2014.
The ceremony will include performances from outstanding musicals such as The Lion King, Les Misérables and Strictly Ballroom which have either played or will play in Sydney.
