East Sydney Creativity on Show for Art & About

Some of Sydney's most exciting creative businesses have thrown open their doors on Wednesday evenings this October to celebrate the City's 12th annual Art & About Sydney.

The perfect antidote to the mid-week blues, Escape Early on Wednesdays by the East Sydney Creative collective encourages Sydneysiders to get up close and personal with artists, architects and designers in a series of after-work exhibitions, installations, performances and workshops.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said it was a fantastic showcase of East Sydney's dynamic creative scene. "East Sydney is a hive of creative activity, with dozens of emerging and established cultural enterprises," the Lord Mayor said. "This program gives locals and visitors alike a rare chance to take a look inside the creative businesses that give this area its buzz."

More than 20 creative and cultural organisations in Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, East Sydney and Paddington are participating in the program, which will feature everything from a 'speed-dating' night for emerging creatives and an interactive crochet club to lessons on interior design drawing.

Events will be held from 5pm onwards on 2, 9 and 16 October.

Escape Early on Wednesdays highlights

Left Right Date Night with Homework - 2 October

This unusual take on speed-dating, hosted by co-working space Homework, aims to connect 'ideas people' (who typically favour the right side of their brain) with 'technical people' (who typically favour the left) in a fun and friendly environment, with the hope that opportunities to start new creative projects together will emerge.

Craft-fest-a-thon at Brand X - 2 October

This 'CWA session with a twist' will give crafty types the chance to hone their skills under the guidance of experienced knitwear designer Kirsten Fredericks. Hosted by Brand X, this interactive session will be run out of the famed creative collective's new studio in the basement of Zoo Vintage Emporium in Surry Hills.

Pop Up Cinema and Bar at Metro Screen - 2, 9 and 16 October

For one month only, the Metro Screen studios at Paddington Town Hall will be transformed into a pop-up cinema and bar by local artist Gui Andrade. Featuring a new program of short films each week and delicious popcorn munchies, this session will take viewers on a psychedelic journey to the 1980s and back again.

Open Studio and Talks at Rouse Phillips - 9 October

Join emerging design duo Tim Rouse and Anastasia Phillips of Oxford Street textile design studio Rouse Phillips for a talk about the design and production process behind their beautiful textiles and hand-knotted rugs. The talks will explain the importance of texture, colour and pattern, and their latest range will be available for purchase.

Take Shape at Province - 16 October

For 10 days in October, multi-disciplinary creative studio Province will take over UNM on Oxford Street to create a dynamic graphic installation, where the audience is invited to interact, rearrange and even purchase a piece to take home. Enjoy a farewell drink with the team at this final session before the project closes.

Open Salon Night at A.R.P. - 16 October

Oxford Street's Artists Residency Program hosts a fortnightly salon for resident artists to get together and discuss the trials and tribulations of the artistic process.
