Fishing plays an important part in the economy of the island of Sri Lanka. The island is surrounded by the Indian Ocean so many people make a living out of fishing in the sea either in boats floating on the ocean waves, by standing on the shore using nets or throwing in fishing lines, or by standing on stilts in the water.

Stilt fishing is a method of fishing unique to the island country of Sri Lanka. It is an old practice, dating back about 70 years, where people stand on stilt poles and toss a fishing line in the water below them. I understand that this practice started during the Second World War. when there were food shortages and overcrowded fishing spots. Some southern Sri Lankin people came up with the idea of fishing on the water.

They first stood on the wreckage of capsized ships and sunken aircraft. They then put stilts in the coral reefs to stand on. They were generally found along a 30 klm stretch of the southern shore of Sri Lanka between the towns of Unawatuna and Weligama where they were often seen fishing between dawn and dusk.

Nowadays it is a popular tourist attraction to see these stilt fishermen in action. On my recent visit to Sir Lanka I was fortunate to go to one of these stilt fishing locations in Koggala and see some fishermen sit on their stilts. They were dressed in traditional clothes and made for some pleasing photos opportunities. They then let some of the members of my tour group have a go at sitting on the stilts to pose for photos.

I am not sure if these local people were real fishermen, or just locals being fishermen for the sake of tourists, but they did look the part sitting on their stilts. Many of the original stilt fishermen have now taken up farming, or they resell fish purchased at larger markets. A few still fish, but often further out to sea. The local Sri Lankans work hard at making a living out of whatever they do.

Returning to Newcastle for its fifth year, the Newcastle International Animation Festival (NIAF) will showcase over 80 of the best animated short-films from around the world! Across the three day animation feast, be inspired by an eclectic line-up of animation from award winners, outstanding industry icons, inspiring independents, stupendous studios, and newcomers exploring their talent on screen for the very first time.

This year Opening Night will present the Australian Showcase, a collection of stand-out Aussie animations, screened alongside talks from some of Australia’s most talented animators who will share their journeys in taking animation to the world. The speaker line up will include:

• Award winning Writer, Director and Animator Alex Weight (‘Happy Feet’, ‘Prank’, ‘Blinky Bill: The Movie’,)
• Animation Supervisor and Storyboard Artist Simon Ashton (‘Peter Rabbit’, ‘The Lego Movie’, ‘The Lion King 2)
• The night will wrap with a Q&A session, so you can pick the brains of these industry legends, a must-see for aspiring animators!

SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL 2020 SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN!

Entries are now open for the 67th Sydney Film Festival, showcasing the best of Australian and international cinema, which will take place from 3 to 14 June 2020. 

Each year, the Sydney Film Festival presents a diverse slate of films from Australia and around the world. In 2019, over 280 films from 63 countries were screened to an audience of more than 180,000.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of the 2020 Sydney Film Festival. Entries are open to features, documentaries and short films. Get to it!

Submissions for the Festival are being accepted through FilmFestivalLife. Closing dates: 31 January 2020 for international productions, 28 February 2020 for Australian productions, Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films, and Documentary Australia Foundation Award.

The 2020 season will mark the 51st year of the Festival’s Australian short film competition, making it the oldest short film competition in Australia. Since 1970, the competition has served as a launch pad for emerging Australian film talent, spring-boarding countless directors, producers and actors towards international success.

Entries are open to features, documentaries and short films in all categories of the Festival program, including competitive sections:

• The Documentary Australia Foundation (DAF) Award for Australian Documentary. The prize is supported by Documentary Australia Foundation with a $10,000 cash partnership. Winners are Academy Award-eligible.
• The Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films Live Action Award and Best Director (the Rouben Mamoulian Award) – both winners receive cash prizes of $7,000 sponsored by Dendy Cinemas, who have supported the Awards for 32 years. Winners are Academy Award-eligible.
• The Yoram Gross Animation Award, named in memory of the Australian animation producer and director Yoram Gross, provides a $5,000 cash prize to the best Australian animated short film. Winners are Academy Award-eligible.
• The Event Cinemas Australian Short Screenplay Award, which provides a cash prize of $5,000.

The Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films and the DAF Australian Documentary competition are open exclusively to Australian productions.

Events calendar to pump $880 million into Queensland economy

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has launched the 2020 Queensland events calendar, worth $880m to the state’s economy.

The Premier said the It’s Live! In Queensland events calendar had grown in value from $380m in 2015 to $880m in 2020.

“We invest in major events because they grow our tourism industry and create jobs here in Queensland,” the Premier said.

“My government has more than doubled the value of Queensland’s events calendar since 2015.

"That’s an extra half-a-billion-dollars generated for local businesses by our events over five years.

“This proves that our strategy to support events that we know will lure tourists and support our tourism industry is paying off.”

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said Queensland boasted the best calendar of events in Australia.

"Next year’s calendar will feature a host of new events, from the inaugural ATP Cup in January, to a Bledisloe Cup game in October and of course The Ring Cycle in November,” she said.

Ms Jones said Queensland would continue to pursue high-value events into the future.

"One of the main reasons we invested in SportAccord on the Gold Coast in May was to show the world Queensland was a world leading destination for major events following the 2018 Commonwealth Games," she said.

"What we know is that Queensland is uniquely positioned as a world-class events destination because of our iconic tourism landscapes and experiences.

"Having so many destinations right across the State that are capable of hosting events of all sizes is an incredible competitive advantage and one we will continue to leverage as we aim to secure even more events for Queensland.

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Leanne Coddington said innovation had been key in continuing to raise the value of the It’s Live! In Queensland calendar.

“The NRL Magic Round, Curiocity, QODE and the Outback Queensland Masters Golf tournament are four examples just in the past year of new events that have not been done anywhere else in Australia before and are now uniquely Queensland,” she said.

Tracey Thomas receives CINZ Outstanding Contributor Award

Tracey Thomas from Conference Innovators, a leading and long-standing professional conference organiser in New Zealand, has received the 2019 Conventions and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) Outstanding Contributor Award.

CINZ Chief Executive Sue Sullivan presented Mr Thomas with the award at the business events industry’s 43rd annual conference gala dinner in Queenstown last night.

He is a director and owner of Conference Innovators, a leading New Zealand PCO company with offices in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Conference Innovators specialises in the full-service management of national and international association meetings for a range of clients across medical, academic, scientific, legal and government sectors throughout Australasia.

“Tracey has strongly contributed to the New Zealand tourism and business events sector for more than 30 years. Prior to becoming a PCO, Tracey managed hotels around the country. Throughout his career he has always taken an active role in tourism and convention associations,” she says.

“He has been an avid supporter of CINZ and has made an enormous contribution by sitting on the CINZ Board from 2006 to 2012 and was elected again in 2018 for his fourth term. Tracey played a key role in the establishment of the CINZ Approved PCO Group and was one of the foundation members. He was a driving force, working tirelessly on the PCO Group Code of Ethics, Rules and Responsibilities pushing for the highest standards and only just recently was involved in updating the documents to ensure that our CINZ PCOs continue to adhere to the strict guidelines and level of professional excellence that drives this group.

“Conference Innovators is bringing the first international conference to Te Pae Christchurch convention centre in 2020.
