Visitors to Okinawa in October can experience one of Japan’s most spectacular traditional festivals when the Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival returns to Naha from 10 to 12 October 2026.

A 200-Metre, 43-Tonne Giant Rope

The centrepiece of the Naha Great Tug-of-War is an enormous traditional rice-straw rope measuring approximately 200 metres long and weighing 43 tonnes. The rope has been recognised by Guinness World Records and is one of the most remarkable sights at any Okinawa festival.

The rope is fitted with hundreds of smaller ropes, allowing large numbers of participants to grab hold and join the contest. Visitors are welcome to become part of the enormous crowd and experience the excitement of pulling the rope alongside local residents and travellers from around the world.

The festival atmosphere extends to Kokusai Street and the Kumoji area, placing visitors close to Naha’s shopping, dining and entertainment precincts.

A related citizens' festival at Onoyama Comprehensive Athletic Park is also scheduled throughout the three-day celebration, with stage entertainment and other activities.
