Dai-Chochin Matsuri - Giant Lantern Festival

This festival features enormous chochin (paper lanterns), also known as "amazingly gigantic lanterns," which measure over 5 meters in diameter and 10 meters in length.

The most exciting scene of the festival is when gigantic 1-meter tall candles are lit inside the enormous chochin lanterns. Spectators also experience a pleasant sense of excitement as if witnessing a historic scene.

Myths, legends and a party atmosphere
Each of the lanterns, some as tall as 10 meters, is decorated with colorful scenes from Japanese myths and legends. As the lanterns are lit, each tale come to life amid the vibrant party atmosphere.

Magic lamps
Although the festival is in full swing throughout the day, the real magic happens at dusk when meter-tall candles are hoisted into giant lanterns.

With its origins in a Shinto practice to ward off sea demons, you can witness how the festival has grown and incorporated its history into a spellbinding demonstration of local artistry.

New Zealand's P-J Charteris name Chair of Judges for KPMG Sydney Royal Wine Show

P-J Charteris
It is fair to say those attached to the wine industry, wherever you may find them, don’t just like what they do, they love what they do.

It consumes them and their passion is contagious.

P-J Charteris is one such character.

In a nation famous for great Rugby and equally as dominating wines, New Zealand-born Charteris chose the latter and at the age of just 13 would leave school each afternoon to work at a vineyard in his native Waikato for pocket money.

The rest as they say is history.

A move to South Australia would see P-J study at Roseworthy Agricultural College and then secure positions at renowned vineyards around the world, including North America and France.

In 2010 P-J became the Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year, a tip of the cap to his 12 years of devotion to the acclaimed Brokenwood Wines. He has remained an influential wine figure ever since.

As well as running Charteris Wine Consulting from the Hunter Valley, P-J has never turned his back to his New Zealand roots and has created his own small label, Charteris Wines from Bannockburn in the Central Otago region of New Zealand.

2018 sees P-J add another string to his bow as he takes up the position as the new Chair of Judges of the KPMG Sydney Royal Wine Show which continues today until Thursday August 2 at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park.

Sydney Royal Wine Committee Chair Sally Evans says P-J Charteris provides his own distinct style to the wine judging process;

“P-J truly represents the new guard in the world of wine judging and winemaking,” Sally Evans said.

“P-J is more than just an experienced technician. He is an innovative thinker, a strong leader and an inspiring communicator who will bring new skills and ideas into the Sydney Royal mix. He is a fantastic addition to our judging pedigree, following the considerable contributions of past Chairs Samantha Connew and Iain Riggs AM.

“P-J is the mark of a modern winemaker, with an eye to future trends while respecting the value of tradition,” Sally Evans said.

P-J Chateris says he relishes the opportunity to be part of the process of judging Australia’s best wines at the KPMG Sydney Royal Wine Show;

“The Australian Wine show system is at the forefront of driving quality and style on a local and global level for our winemakers. It is an honour and privilege to have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of some of our industry’s giants as the Chair of Judges at the KPMG Sydney Royal Wine Show,” he said.

“We have an impressive team of judges from a broad range of backgrounds which should ensure diversity of style throughout the results. With entries up this year we are looking forward to finding some of the finest wines Australia has to offer,” he said.

P-J Charteris is being supported during the four-day judging process by International Guest Judge Fongyee Walker MW, currently based in Beijing, China.

The public will also be able to be part of the experience with more than 2200 wines from the Sydney Royal Wine Show, including all award-winners, being put up for tasting at the Grape, Grain & Graze Festival on Saturday, August 11 at Sydney Showground.

Information about the Grape, Grain & Graze Festival including pre-purchased tickets can be found at;

The Grape, Grain & Graze Festival is co-sponsored by the New South Wales Government’s Department of Primary Industries, Riedel and Wine Selectors.

Stomp - the International Sensation is Back in Sydney!

Stomp
Stomp - what an adrenalin pumping, exhilarating show!

I was fortunate to see the opening night performance of Stomp this week at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney. I usually go to see musicals at the Capitol Theatre, so this was a pleasant change. Stomp is not a musical, or opera, or drama. It is a very talented bunch of six guys and 2 girls who do amazing feats of producing rhythmic sounds with there hands and feet.

There is no band or orchestra for Stomp. All the musical beats and tunes are done with the hands and feet of the performers.

Stomp
A variety of everyday props are utilised to tap out varying beats. There are brooms, bags, tin lids, inner tubes,  kitchen sinks, pipes, supermarket trolleys, and drums. Some are tapped softly, some hammered loudly, some slow, and some very fast.

Most of the action takes place on the stage floor, but some of it is also seen on the rear wall of the stage as performers are suspended in front of various metallic objects that are drummed.

The skilled performers make all there choreographed tapping and stomping movements look so easy. However, their complex moves need split precision timing as they work together as a team on the stage. Their bodies must be totally exhausted at the end of each show.

Stomp
Apart from enjoying listening to the varying sounds made on stage, the best part of Stomp is the comedy elements of the show. Each of the eight performers personalities comes through, with light relief offered particularly by one of the men. There are many moments during the show when laughter can be heard arising from the audience

Another standout feature of Stomp is the audience participation that is encouraged. At different parts of the show, the audience is invited to join in with the hand clapping and foot stomping. It takes a few attempts to get the timing right, but with persistence, there is some resemblance of a tune heard from the occupants of the theatre seats.

Stomp
Stomp is suitable for ages to enjoy. Some of the loudest laughs on the night could be heard from the children in the audience. It was fun to hear some of their off the cuff remarks as they yelled them out to the actors on the stage.

The just under 2-hour Stomp performance is captivating from start to finish. It consists of many segments, just like a sketch review show. Take note - there is no interval, so stock up with supplies from the candy bar and drinks bar before the show commences.

I was accompanied to Stomp by a new arrival from Europe who had little knowledge of the English language. However, apart from a few "hi's", there was no dialogue in the show so he had no trouble appreciating all the action on the stage. A person with no knowledge at all of English could enjoy all of Stomp with no language barrier.

Stomp is currently being performed in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre just until 5 August 2018, so you will have to act quickly to get some tickets see the show.

Tickets to Stomp at the Capitol Theatre can be made online through Ticketmaster or by calling 1300 558 878, or can be purchased in person at the Capitol Theatre Box Office, Monday to Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm. Have a fabulous night out with your friends, family or work mates. Group bookings receive a discount for bulk purchases. To make a group booking please call (02) 8240 2290 or email.

First Asian MICE Cruise Conference Launches At IT&CMA 2018

IT&CMA 2018 will debut the region’s first-ever Asian MICE Cruise Conference on 18 September as part of the show’s 3-day business, education and networking programme.

Confirmed key opinion leaders taking the stage include Dream Cruises’ President and Crystal Cruises Asia’s Managing Director, Thatcher Brown; Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Managing Director Angie Stephen; Worldwide Cruise Associates’ Co-founder and President, Steve Bloss; Genting Cruise Lines’ Senior Vice President – International Sales, Michael Goh; Silversea Cruises’ Vice President, Corporate & Incentive sales, Freddy Muller; and Princess Cruises’ Southeast Asia Director, Farriek Tawfik.

Said Karen Yue, Editor of TTGmice and Group Editor of TTG Travel Trade Publishing, “The cruise industry is booming and MICE is undoubtedly the next big thing for the sector. Market leaders are already capitalising on the potential, while many are still coming into the game. TTGmice is proud to put forth this first and only platform of its kind in the region – an open conversation with the world’s leading cruise executives.”

Kicking off IT&CMA’s education highlights on its first day, this half-day event that will run from 0830 to 1430hrs at the Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld will feature a CEO Cruise panel discussion and an experts’ exchange on making the case for MICE cruises, among other sessions, as well as networking opportunities at its hosted breakfast, coffee break and luncheon.

On the motivation behind this conference, Darren Ng, Managing Director of TTG Asia Media said, “As a pioneer in the MICE industry, TTG is always at the pulse of key developments impacting the profession. Cruise offers a huge playing field for its many stakeholders, where its potential rests on the immense collaboration between the private and public sector across verticals and geographies to ensure that the right policies, infrastructure, facilities, producs and services are in place.”

Organisers therefore expect 400 regional MICE stakeholders relevant to the cruise sector to attend, with at least half of attendees comprising of buyers covering corporate incentive, meetings and events, incentive trips, luxury travel, associations and academics. Hotels, resorts, airlines, destination management companies, government representatives from national tourism organisations, convention visitor bureaus and ports, and media professionals will form the remaining audience profile.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) 2017 Asia Cruise Trends, cruise capacity across all metrics (number of ships, voyages, operating days and passengers) has increased significantly since 2013 with greater uptrend expected in the foreseeable future. Asia remains at the heart of this growth with passengers from this region quadrupling over 5 years. Last year, passenger capacity was estimated at 4.24 million.

While leisure cruise demand has seen a revival, the concept of cruises as an appealing and viable option for business events is still relatively new. Shared panelist Tawfik of Princess Cruises, “Today, there is low awareness among organisers and companies that MICE events can be organised easily and held successfully onboard cruise ships. As a possible budget-saving, all-inclusive alternative to hosting a meeting at a luxury resort, cruises also offer plenty of interaction and teambuilding opportunities, as well as a unique experience to give delegates that “wow” factor, such as waking up in a new country every day while only needing to pack and unpack once. The advantages of a MICE event at sea are endless.”

Bloss of Worldwide Cruise Associates echoes the perspective that greater exposure is needed for MICE cruises, he said, “As a collective, we strive to foster understanding of what a modern cruise ship is, and make purchasers aware of how to buy cruises while embracing cruises’ different terms and requirements. Today, there are over 55 cruise lines, some 400 ships plus 100 new ships in the pipeline. It is possible to have an unbiased all-in-one cruise shopping experience with options that extend globally.” In addition to being part of the inaugural conference’s panel, the organisation is also exhibiting under IT&CMA’s cruise cluster.

The most fun you can have in an opera house!

The Turk in Italy
Do you think comic opera is a contradiction in terms? You’re not alone. Director Simon Phillips thought so too. “I felt opera was about human emotion getting to a scale where it could not be expressed any way but song.”

But when he discovered the “unashamedly frivolous” delights of lighter operas, he changed his mind. Lucky for us, because the acclaimed director has a magic touch with comic farce, and his slapstick-filled The Turk in Italy is just about as much fun as you can have in an opera house. It opens next week!

Meanwhile, you can experience the “gripping theatre ” of Rigoletto or get a glimpse at the future of opera at Aida. In Verdi’s masterpiece, life is always on the line, and individual love stories reverberate through history. Big emotions require big music, and Aida more than delivers. The big day dawns - Whitsundays gears up for wedding of the year

Joshua Breakwell and Joshua Starr
A surprise for the two mothers giving their boys away and a ceremony filled with emotion are just sprinklings of what guests at the Whitsundays’ wedding of the year can expect this week.

On Friday, August 3, Newcastle couple Joshua Breakwell and Joshua Starr – winners of the Whitsundays’ $50K wedding giveaway celebrating marriage equality – will finally say ‘I Do’ on the grounds of Paradise Cove Resort.

The wedding, incorporating around 60 guests including wedding media, reality television stars and family and friends, has taken eight months and the efforts of 16 Whitsunday wedding suppliers to pull off.

From the guest and groom transfers with Red Cat Adventures and Air Whitsunday, to the newest addition of a honeymoon bareboat charter with Sunsail Whitsundays, every detail has been carefully planned and every service given free of charge by an industry determined to offer destination weddings for all.

Paradise Cove co-owner Julie Telford, who originally came up with the concept of a competition celebrating Australia’s acceptance of same sex marriage, said it had propelled the Whitsundays into the national spotlight and been an incredible journey for all involved.

“Who would have thought we’d have got to this point – but we couldn’t have done it without all the suppliers putting in an overwhelming amount of work to make sure this is literally a dream wedding – and without the Josh’s who have been the ideal couple to win this competition,” she said.

“When we started this I thought, ‘let’s give away a wedding, let’s celebrate marriage equality and let’s give something to Australia’ – but now I feel like ‘let’s give something to Josh and Josh’.”

Jess Lawrence from the Wedding Planners Whitsundays and peak industry group WeddingsWhitsundays.com, said while this wasn’t the region’s first wedding giveaway it was certainly the biggest and the largest celebration of same sex marriage to date.

“It’s become more than any of us ever hoped for in terms of possibilities for the future, showcasing the diversity of what we can offer and showcasing how well the wedding community works together – it wouldn’t be possible if we weren’t all collaborating,” she said.

“And for the Josh’s it means the world – from winning the competition to having the wedding of their dreams – seeing it come to fruition is going to be very emotional this week.”

The Joshua’s, who prior to Australia’s legislative changes would have travelled to the US to tie the knot, said the biggest thing for them was finally being able to marry in the company of family and friends.

“Having all the people who are really close to you in the one spot on a day that’s all about you and your partner is very special,” Joshua Breakwell said.

“Forming relationships with people in the Whitsundays has also been pretty cool – we’ve had a great time hanging out with everyone,” Joshua Starr added.

With the Joshua’s inviting 12 celebrities including gay icons Magda Szubanski, Penny Wong and Em Rusciano to their big day, Tourism Whitsundays General Manager Tash Wheeler acknowledged media interest in the wedding had been intense.

Ms Wheeler said Tourism Whitsundays would be bringing along representatives from the publications Your Queensland Wedding, Queensland Brides, The Bride’s Tree, Polka Dot Bride, Wed Shed, and Dancing With Her in a first for a Whitsunday wedding industry ‘famil’.

“We do a wedding famil every year but this one is so special because we’re actually showcasing a real wedding and a wedding that is so exciting and with so much hype,” she said.

“It’s also showcasing that a wedding in the Whitsundays can be anything you want it to be – a holiday, a reconnection for your family and friends – it’s a whole package.

“And watching what Weddings Whitsundays and The Wedding Planners Whitsundays have been able to do with this in terms of promoting the destination has been absolutely priceless – it’s a good news story along with Daydream and Hayman islands opening back up, and a celebration of where we’re at.”

Joining in that celebration from the list of invited celebrities are Carly Saunders and Tresne Middleton, a.k.a. the ‘positive pair’, who went public with their own relationship during the 2014 series of Channel Seven’s MKR.

Now dedicated to promoting positivity through their business ‘The Happiness Mission’, Carly and Tresne were married overseas after an initial ‘commitment ceremony’ in Australia.

“It was kind of hard because it was just us, our family weren’t there to share it – so we definitely want to get married again – third time lucky,” Tresne said.

As for Friday’s ceremony, celebrant Annie Lloyd-Lewis said it would be “fairly traditional, but very romantic and very sincere”.

“There may even be a few tissues fluttering in the breeze,” she said.
