5 More of the Best Walks in Sydney for Scenic Adventures, History and Wildlife

Hermitage Foreshore Walk
Sydney is blessed with walking trails that combine spectacular scenery, fascinating history, Aboriginal heritage, native wildlife and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. From peaceful harbour foreshore paths to dramatic coastal cliffs and tranquil bushland, these five of the best walks in Sydney offer memorable ways to explore the city and get active.

1. Hermitage Foreshore Walk

The Hermitage Foreshore Walk is a beautiful family-friendly Sydney coastal walk linking Nielsen Park with Bayview Hill Road in Rose Bay. The approximately 1.8km trail passes five beaches, including picturesque Milk Beach, where walkers can stop for a swim, picnic or relaxing break.

Along the mostly shaded route are views of Sydney Harbour, Shark Island, historic properties and spectacular sunsets. The trail is mainly a boardwalk but includes numerous stairs.

Distance: About 1.8km one way
Difficulty: Easy, with stairs

2. Cape Baily Walking Track

Cape Baily Walking Track
For dramatic coastal scenery, the Cape Baily Walking Track in Kamay Botany Bay National Park is a rewarding choice. Starting near Cape Solander at Kurnell, the trail follows sandstone cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean before reaching Cape Baily Lighthouse.

The walk provides excellent opportunities for coastal photography and wildlife spotting. Walkers can choose a shorter 4km one-way route to Potter Point or complete an approximately 8km return walk.

There is little shade, so carrying plenty of water, wearing sun protection and choosing cooler conditions is recommended.

Distance: 4km one way or about 8km return
Difficulty: Easy to medium

3. Cascades Trail

Nature lovers can escape the city crowds on the Cascades Trail through Garigal National Park. Beginning near Acron Oval in St Ives, this 3.2km return bushwalk passes through native woodland before reaching small waterfalls and rock pools.

Keep watch for Australian wildlife including kookaburras, burrowing frogs and Rosenberg's goannas. The surrounding bushland also contains Aboriginal rock engravings and cave art, adding an important cultural dimension to the walk.

Distance: 3.2km return
Difficulty: Medium

4. Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay Walk

Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay Walk
The Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay Walk is one of Sydney's most rewarding harbour walks for spectacular city photography. Beginning near Taronga Zoo Wharf, the approximately 4km trail travels through an old angophora forest before reaching Clifton Gardens Reserve and Chowder Bay.

Along the way, walkers can enjoy exceptional views towards the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour, South Head, Rose Bay and Shark Island. Wildlife, historic sites and ancient trees add to the experience.

Distance: 4km one way
Difficulty: Easy to medium, with steps

5. South Head Heritage Trail

South Head Heritage Trail
History and spectacular ocean views combine on the South Head Heritage Trail from Watsons Bay to Hornby Lighthouse. The approximately 2km route passes Camp Cove before continuing along historic pathways to the distinctive red-and-white lighthouse.
