3 More of the Best Walks in Sydney for Spectacular Views and Outdoor Adventures

Sydney Harbour National Park
Sydney's walking trails offer much more than exercise. They reveal dramatic coastlines, historic landmarks, Aboriginal heritage, native wildlife and some of the city's most spectacular viewpoints. These three Sydney walks are ideal for travellers wanting to explore beyond the city's best-known trails, with options ranging from an accessible harbour walk to a historic lighthouse adventure.

1. Fairfax Walk at North Head

The Fairfax Walk is a short and relaxing Sydney walk at North Head in Sydney Harbour National Park, making it an excellent choice for families and visitors seeking spectacular views without a long hike.

The approximately 1km loop follows a paved, gentle path around North Head, with ocean panoramas and glimpses towards Sydney's skyline. Yiningma Lookout and Burragula Lookout provide outstanding photography opportunities, particularly when the light is changing across the harbour and coastline.

The area is also a popular vantage point for whale watching during migration seasons. Visitors should follow all current park closures and safety advice, particularly around areas affected by fire damage or geological instability.

Distance: 1km loop
Difficulty: Easy and wheelchair accessible

2. Western Escarpment Walking Track

Malabar Headland National Park
For a taste of Sydney's coastal bushland, head to the Western Escarpment Walking Track at Malabar Headland National Park. Starting at Pioneers Park, the short trail provides impressive views across Malabar Headland, Maroubra Beach and Botany Bay.

The well-formed track features lookouts and seating where walkers can pause to enjoy the scenery. Wildlife enthusiasts can watch for red wattlebirds, New Holland honeyeaters and blue fairy-wrens, while sea eagles and kestrels may be seen soaring above the headland.

At around 1km each way, this walk is an easy way to experience Sydney's eastern coastal landscape. Some short steep sections and occasional steps add a little extra exercise.

Distance: 1km one way
Difficulty: Easy to medium

3. Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk

Barrenjoey Lighthouse Wal
One of Sydney's most rewarding short hikes, the Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk climbs the spectacular headland above Palm Beach to the historic Barrenjoey Lighthouse.

Built in 1881 and positioned about 91 metres above sea level, the lighthouse provides magnificent views across Broken Bay, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and towards the Central Coast. The Barrenjoey Track takes around 30 minutes each way, while the steeper Smugglers Track offers a more challenging alternative.

The location will also be familiar to fans of the Australian television series Home and Away, with Palm Beach providing a backdrop for many scenes.

After the walk, explore Palm Beach or stay after dark to experience the headland's exceptional night skies. Palm Beach Headland is recognised as the Southern Hemisphere's first Urban Night Sky Place.

Distance: 1km one way
Difficulty: Moderate
